Hudson’s state record safe after close call

December 6, 2014 —

The streak is safe. Long live the streak.

The Ithaca Yellowjackets, winners of 69 straight high school football games, finally saw their winning streak end on Saturday evening. Ithaca fell to Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central 22-12 in the Division 6 state championship game at Ford Field.

The Yellowjackets were three wins away from tying the Hudson Tigers who own the state record of 72 consecutive wins from 1968-75. Ithaca had not lost since the end of the 2009 season in the state semifinal game.

For almost five years from 2010-14 Ithaca won every game including four state titles and 24 playoff wins. Monroe CC jumped ahead 8-0 and never trailed despite being outplayed by Ithaca in a game the Jackets very easily could have won.

Ithaca had just two senior starters against a veteran MCC team.

Congratulations to Ithaca on its great streak of success but for now the sign at Thompson Field is safe and will be there for many years to come.
