February 16, 2011 —
The 9th annual Hudson Science Olympiad Tournament was held on Saturday February 5th and went off without a hitch thanks to the efforts of a great number of people. Science Olympiad is a non-profit organization dedicated to furthering Science Education in America. Teams of fifteen students compete in twenty-three events ranging from testing, to performance to building events designed to test science knowledge and ability. Schools from all over the area competed including Pittsford, Hillsdale, Saline, and Chelsea to name a few.
Capturing gold medals for our Hudson Tigers included Andrew Enerson and Zach Luma in both Storm the Castle and Can’t Judge a Powder, Jeannette High and Jocelyn Messer in Awesome Aquifer, Brie Wilenius and Jordan Hayes in Crime Busters, Ethan Sword and McKendry Evans in Write it / Do it, and Jackie Raeff, Kelsy Bloomer, and Brie Wilenius in Experimental Design. Second place awards went to Ben Sunderman and Jordan Hayes in Ornithology while bronze medals were won by Ethan Sword and McKendry Evans in Tower Building, Mariah Walkowicz and Jenna Weatherwax in Write it / Do it, Skylar Stacey and Sean Murray in Fossils, and Thomas Atkin and Ben Sunderman in Junkyard Challenge. We also had a few 4th place finishes including Te’a Romanowski and Seryna Martindale in Bottle Rocket and Wyatt Scudder and Jason Stien in Storm the Castle. Overall Hudson took 10th and 2nd place respectively, losing only to 1st place Scranton in a field of 19 schools.
I personally want to thank everyone for an awesome job on Saturday! From my perspective the day could not have run any smoother and that is due directly to the support of teachers, custodians, parents and student volunteers.
