Pittsford’s Ruder named outstanding senior

Senior Kelly Ruder of Pittsford, Mich., earned the Outstanding Senior Award from the Mathematics Department at Siena Heights University.

Ruder was awarded the honor following SHU’s annual spring Honors Convocation ceremony April 29.

Ruder will graduate in December from Siena following the completion of her student teaching. She received an honorable mention this year from COMAP, a worldwide mathematical modeling competition. While at SHU, she also received the Promising New Leader Award, the Freshmen Chemistry Award, the Freshmen Mathematics Award, the Sophomore Mathematics Award, the COMAP Successful Participant Award and the COMAP Meritorious Award. She was a 2009-11 Who’s Who member and the recipient of the NCTM Secondary Prospective Teacher Coursework Scholarship, a national award. Ruder has also been on the Dean’s List.

While at Siena Heights, she was a member of Pi Mu Epsilon, the mathematics honors fraternity, the Teacher Education Association of Community Help organization, Residence Hall Council, Student Support Services, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Detroit Area Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Michigan Area Council of Teachers of Mathematics and Pittsford Public Library Friends. She served on the Mathematics Faculty Search Committee, Residence Director Search Committee and Education Faculty Search Committee.

Ruder was also a McNair Scholar, a National Residence Hall Honorary, a COMAP Participant and a chemistry laboratory teaching assistant. She also has served as deputy township clerk forRansomTownship.

Ruder, a 2007 Pittsford High School graduate and daughter of Dale and Susan Ruder, plans to complete her teacher education training at Onsted Middle School this fall. Her eventual goal is to teach mathematics at the collegiate level.
