The spring sports kicked off last Wednesday afternoon at home as the Lady Tiger softball team got off to a great start. Hudson swept Morenci in a twinbill winning both games on the home diamond by scores of 8-1 and 8-6. Senior hurler Sam Merillat was the winning pitcher in both contests.
In the first game Merillat gave up one run in the first inning and then that was it. She recorded ten strikeouts and allowed just two hits. Also, in game one Merillat was the hitting star for the Lady Tigers as she had two hits and three runs batted in. Both of her hits were triples. Junior Ashley Monahan had a solo home run and also had a run-scoring single. Senior Katie Benschoter had a RBI double and Payton Darr also had a RBI single.
In the second game Ali Anderson had a single and next Merillat stroked a two-run homer. Senior Ashley Schneider singled and later scored making it 3-0. Morenci cut things to 3-2 and then Hudson fell behind 5-4. However, Monahan doubled to begin the fifth inning and a bases loaded two-run single by Darr gave Hudson back the lead for good as Hudson went on for the win. Merillat had five strikeouts in game two. At 2-0 the Lady Tigers are off to a strong start and will return to action after spring break.
