Graduation gets squirrelly

June 1, 2012 —

The graduates of the Hudson Area High School will have something special to remember their graduation by: having to do it under emergency lighting when power was out around Hudson.

A Consumer’s Energy spokesman said a squirrel getting into the wrong place in the substation was the cause of the outage, which lasted from 9:08 Sunday morning to about 3:30 in the afternoon. About two thousand customers in the area were affected. In addition to the school, the blackout affected city functions as the water works, and backup power was needed.

Consumer’s Energy has plans to rebuild the substation later this year, as it has long been due for replacement.

Despite the power outage, the annual ceremony went more or less as planned. Fifty-five seniors, one of the smallest classes in many years, filed into the darker than normal gym for the ceremony.

The valedictorian of the Class of 2012 was Erin Luma; the salutatorian was Elizabeth Johnston. The rest of the top ten consists of Samantha Merillat, Cheyenne Booker, Maria Rising, Julia Shoemaker, Devan Marry, Ashley Schneider, James Herron and Paige Cleveland.
