The 14th annual David Clark Memorial Youth Baseball Tournament was held over the weekend here in Hudson with 14 teams participating in the annual tourney. The winner was a team from Defiance, Ohio, as the Defiance Meijer team won all seven games to take home the title. This was the second year in a row a team from Defiance won the tournament as last year it was Defiance Subway winning the tourney. The favorite going in was the Lansing Moose. which won the tourney two years ago and were unable to defend their title in 2013. The Moose were back this summer and made the semifinals but were knocked out of the tourney by their local rival the Capital City Cobras another team from the Lansing area. The Defiance Meijer beat beat the Cobras 8-2 in the title game to finish 7-0 for the four-day tourney that is held each July the weekend after the fourth of July. This tournament is now in its 14th years as the DCM XIV was played under ideal weather conditions again from July 10-13th. The local Hudson Tiger team participated in the event and they had a rough go of things falling in three of its four pool play games. “We faced some very challenging competition to say the least,” said veteran Hudson 14U head coach Kevin Muck. “There were some really strong teams and the field of competition was excellent.”
The David Clark Memorial tournament was started on 2001 just two months after former local youth baseball player David Clark lost a long and courageous battle with leukemia. Clark was just 15 at the time of his death and each summer the tournament is held to keep alive the memory of a young player who loved to play the game of baseball.
The tournament helps raise money for the David Clark Memorial Scholarship that is given out each year by the Hudson Schools. David’s parents, Watson and JoAnn, were at most all of the games at Will Carleton Park and again participated in the yearly event helping out and being a part of the opening and closing ceremonies.
The 15th annual David Clark Memorial has already set the dates for next summer as the tourney will be held here in Hudson July 9-12th, 2015.
