Patriots Project

How can our community recognize its fallen veterans, those that served, and those that are true patriots of our freedoms. The men and women that served, fought for, and held to the ideals of a free and democratic United States. A few months ago, Jim Findlay and Bruce Coleman began working on a project to erect a monument that recognizes our patriots. The monument will not be recognizing a specific individual or war period, but  will show respect and gratitude for the Hudson area men and women that have served our nation.

The idea of building a monument of remembrance has evolved into the Patriots Project. The monument will be black marble, with the seal of the United States at the top. The most likely location for the monument will be at the corner of Main Street and Lane Street. This land is located at the corner of the Market house property. I’m told a gas station previously occupied the land.

Donations are being solicited.  Tax deductible contributions can be made to the City of Hudson “Patriots” project”.  A large monument, flag pole, light, bench, and landscaping will be placed on the site. Assistance from business, industry, clubs and organizations, churches, and residents past and present are needed, to reach the goal of raising $15,000 to make this a reality. To date, $6,800 has been contributed. . The goal is to have the money raised, and the monument erected in time for Veterans Day, 2008. Please consider giving to this important endeavor.

Winter Arrives on December 22

Winter officially arrives on Saturday, December 22nd.  So far this fall, we have had several very cold and stormy days. Recently, the weather brought us icy rain and a little snow. As a friendly reminder, it is the responsibility of each property owner to clear ice and snow from sidewalks throughout the city.

In accordance with city ordinances, a property owner is responsible to clear ice and snow from sidewalks, within twelve (12) hours after it stops snowing. In the case of storms during the night, sidewalks shall be cleared by 6:00pm the following day. Additionally, Michigan law prohibits depositing or causing to be deposited any snow, ice, slush onto a roadway or highway.

If a property owner fails to clear the sidewalks within the timeline noted above, the City can have them cleared and a cost assessed to the property owner.

In many instances, property owners have rented out a house or storefront, with the understanding that the tenants will be responsible for snow and ice removal. Even if a property is rented or leased, ultimately, it remains the responsibility of the property owner on record to insure that sidewalks are cleared.

During the past couple of weeks, with the ice storms, some residential areas and downtown buildings have not cleared their sidewalks, which includes the walk along the side of a building.

Snowmobiles and ATV’s Trespassing

Winter is nearly here and snow will be falling and with it that urge to get on the snowmobile or ATV and go for a ride. As is the case in most cities, we have an ordinance which prohibits operating a snowmobile, ATV, or other motor driven vehicles on private property, without the consent of the property owner.

The Hudson Police Department and Lenawee County Sheriff’s Department take this very seriously, and will monitor violations carefully. Violation of this ordinance is a misdemeanor offense, which carries a fine of up to $100.00 or jail time in the Adrian Pokey. Which is already plenty full.
