Following the primary election last Monday, there are now six candidates
for three vacant council seats for the April 3 election. They are
Dale Cosgrove, Jack Donaldson, Robert Goodrich, Harry Westendorf, Irene
Borton and Edward Wolf. Candidates for mayor are Harlow Eastman
and Art Weber.
Dale Berglund received the Pro Deo et Patria Emblem at the Lutheran
Church on Feb 19. He is a Life scout and Member of Boy Scout Troop 2.
Rowland Dow was installed as President of the Hudson
Barbershoppers on Feb 15. Other officers are: Dick Scharp, Elton
VandeZande, and John Fox. Their annual Barbershop show is
scheduled for April 9 at the Miller Gym.
Several high school students picketed city office Monday evening
carrying placards and chanting: “Cash for Cops”, “Higher Wages - More
Pay: Prevent Crime" and so on. The demonstration touched off when two
Hudson policeman resigned to accept similar positions elsewhere for more
money. City Council will meet in special session tonight to discuss the
economic situation of the Police Department.
Hudson chalked up two more wins in close games with Morenci & Vandercook
Lake Friday and Tuesday evenings. They beat Morenci 64-58 and Vandercook
Lake 62-60.
James Laser celebrated his 90th birthday on Feb. 19 at home of his
son and daughter in law Mr. and Mrs. Lester Laser in Prattville
with an Open House for over 150 people. There was a nice story about his
life in the Post-Gazette.
Mr. and Mrs. Claud Crater will celebrate 50th anniversary with an
Open House on March 5. Claud Crater and Linda Loomis were married
in the Court House at Adrian on March 1, 1917. They are parents of 3
children; one son, Ray, was killed in WW II. They have 8 grandchildren
and two great grandchildren.
Lucie Ann Fletcher and Arnold J. Stucky are engaged to be
married. Both are teachers in Battle Creek.
The
Friday Club met at the home of Mrs. E J Engle with 25 members and
9 guests. A program about Will Carleton was presented by Mrs.
C.A. Darwin and Mrs. C. L. Brown.
The
D & C store is offering Bath towels for 57¢ and Women’s half slips for
99¢.
Bob’s Super Market is offering chuck roast for 49¢/lb; cottage cheese
29¢/lb. and bacon for 59¢/lb.
The
A&P store is offering smoked picnic ham for 39¢/lb. roasting chicken
49¢/lb and potatoes 20 lb bag 89¢.
O’Reilly Food Center is offering instant Maxwell House coffee for $1.35
for a 12 oz. can; ham loaf 79¢/lb; Kleenmaid bread 5 loaves for 89¢ and
14 oz. tomato juice for 79¢ (How about those prices? Sure not like
today, eh?)

At the morning
worship hour last Sunday at the First Congregational church in
Pittsford, Star Scout Nevarro Black received his God and Country
Award.
The former Gulf
station will be voting place for the primary election on Feb 20. Seven
candidates are running for three council seats.
Over 75 people
attended the “Town Hall” type meeting held last Tuesday night at Miller
School. Many citizens are upset over the forthcoming closing of the City
Dump and over prospects of a garbage collection fee. A Health
Department representative and Mayor Onweller explained new laws now
governing the dump and refuse collection. The cost of opening the dump
will rise from $2,000 - $2500 to between $7,500 and $8,000 annually.
Then in addition there is a need to provide for an equipment investment
of $25 - 30,000. The council felt it best to contract for refuse and
garbage pickup.
Local births
include a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Billy Crain of Hillsdale; and
a daughter to Mrs. and the late Duane Webster.
There was a photo
of George Minton, who won handicap single with scores of 153, 197
and 183 (total 533). Handicap doubles winners were Ted Minton and
Lynn Burnett. The winner of the 19th Annual Men’s City Tournament
held the past 4 weeks were Ken Kishpaugh, Stub Pibbles, Roger
Beindorf, and Bob Jagelka and Bill Moore.
Seamann Recruit
James Carlton Decker of Waldron graduated from nine weeks naval
basic training at Great Lakes Naval Training Center.
Army Pvt.
Daniel L. Geroux completed a light vehicle drivers course at Ft Dix,
N J.
Army Pvt. First
class Gary L Howard has arrived in Vietnam with the 9th Infantry
Division.
Mr. and Mrs.
William Garr leave Sunday for Albuquerque, NM. Mr. Garr, employed
with Spartan Corp of Jackson, has been transferred out there.
A daughter, Teresa
Mary Gerilyn was born to Jerry and Judith (Eastman) Layman in
Jackson on Feb. 13.
Hudson Woman’s
Club met Tuesday with Mrs. Fred Stiverson Jr. The co-hostess was
Mrs. Leo Miller. The guest speaker was Mr. R J Thompson of
Farmington and Mrs. Michael Moats of Hillsdale who gave a talk
and presentation on the stone crafts method of learning.
Guest speaker at
South Hudson Woman’s Club was Miss Margaret Hartley, librarian at
the public library, who gave a book review on "The Trouble Bush" by Earl
S Mier - an autobiography of the struggle of a person with cerebral
palsy.
The Tigers
defeated Jackson St Mary’s 73-50. Peacock was the big gun for Hudson
with 24 points. Dale Harris and John Donaldson each had 10
pts.
There was a photo
of the 8th grade basketball team from Sacred Heart School, coached by
John Marry and also a photo of the 6th and 7th grade teams.
The Sacred Heart
Cheerleaders pictured were Jenell Camp, Melody Sword, Linda Lum, Mary
Gregg, Ann Meredith, and Marcia Kingsley.
The Catholic Study
Club met in the social room of the Hudson State Savings Bank drive in
building and planned for the White Elephant and Bake Sale for March 30.
A Bible study was led by Mrs. Harry Stultz and Rev. Fr. Loewen.

City
Council decided to purchase a new police car, hiked the City Assessor's
pay from $1,000 to $2,500; held a public hearing on the Wilcox Street
sanitary sewer installation, and approved the appointment of new members
of the board of Review and of three others to Planning Commission.
A fire caused
$6,000 damage to the Kenneth Holloway home on Tomer Rd, just east
of Hughes Hwy. on Tuesday afternoon.
The speaker at the
Hudson Area Chamber of Commerce last Thursday evening was Harold
Elgan, banker from Gaylord, who told of the rapid growth at Gaylord.
Cheryl Ann
Dunbar and Harold Robert Shewman were married on Feb. 4 at
Christ Episcopal Church in Adrian by Rev. Jack Warner.
Janice Ann
Borck and Donald Bilman were married Feb. 9 at Sacred Heart
Church by Rev. Fr. Gerald Loewen.
Mr. and Mrs.
John Kingsley Sr. were honored at a surprise party on Sunday in
honor of their 48th anniversary.
An Evening of
Fashion was enjoyed by the Mothers of Girl Scout Troop 236 at home of
Karen Liesman. The girls modeled clothing they had made, showing a
variety of styles and colors.
Miss Joyce
Hill, a senior at Siena Heights College, was one of eight listed by
President of the college in "Who’s Who among Students in American
Universities" and colleges for 1967.
A son, Danny
Eugene born to Robert and Shirley (Sturges) Post on Feb. 6 at
Detroit.
Miss Leota
Baxter and Mr. Harold H. Draper of Reading were married Feb.
4 at Locust Corners Baptist Church by Rev. Howard Hein.
The Post Gazette
changed from hot type to cold type composition about month ago. The
paper was formerly set on linotype, and now is composed on a pair of
Justowriters. There was a photo of Ron Lawrence who works
part time at newspaper and a trained operator.
(Editor's note: In those days we thought that was really something. We
could never have dreamed of how it is today . . .)
Beth Betz
was named “Homemaker of Tomorrow” in the Hudson Area High School 1967
Better Crocker Homemaker for Tomorrow. She is now in contention for
state and national scholarships.
Hudson Tigers lost
to Adrian Catholic Central 52-42.
Local births
include a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Tom Shiffler; a son to Mr.
and Mrs. Murray McClain of Manitou Beach; a son, Patrick Raymond,
born at Bixby Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Raymond McGrath. The
father is now stationed in Bangkok, Thailand and called to talk with his
wife following birth of the baby.

A record smashing
snow storm paralyzed the area last Thursday night virtually halting
everything over weekend. Then a severe ice storm early Tuesday caused
schools to again cancel classes.
This issue of the
Post-Gazette presents the seven candidates who are running for the
three council seats Mrs. George (Irene) Borton filed as first
woman to run for Council, followed by Dale Cosgrove, Donald Duryea,
Harry Westendorf, Robert Goodrich, Edward Wolf and Jack Donaldson.
Filing for mayor are former councilman Harlow Eastman and
Arthur Weber. The primary election will be Feb 20.

was born to Larry and Linda (Duncan) Richardson at Herrick
Hospital in Tecumseh.

Russell has been named Sales Manager for Irrigation Products by
McDowell Mfg Co. He was former director of sales of Rain Control, Inc.

Clifford F Barrett of New Canaan. Conn., was named vice president
in charge of cake sales at Continental Baking Co.

Sheldon, formerly of Clayton, recently completed an automatic
repairman course in Chanute Air force Base at Chanute., Ill. and is now
stationed at the Semback Air Force base in Germany
Carla Mackey
and Sp4 Franklin A Woodard of Fort Knox Ky are engaged and
plan a June 10 wedding.
The Tigers won a
pair of cage plays by beating Pittsford 79-47 In non-league play and
Addison 62-47 in conference play.
Roger Coman, who
left for service on Jan 18, is now stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, MO.
Mrs. A A
Barrett was hostess for the South Hudson Woman's Club and
entertained their husbands for Gentlemen’s Night. An enjoyable evening
was spent playing cards after a potluck supper served by the hostess,
assisted by Mrs. James Hartley, Mrs. George Lieske and Mrs.
Robert Marry.
Mrs. Blanche
Wenig and Mrs. Nina Jones went to Houghton Lake and
Frankenmuth until Saturday afternoon and with 22 others were stranded
motorists during the snow storm.
Mrs. Glenn
Garland was elected President at the Meeting of Past Noble Grand;
Other officers are; Mrs. Arthur Martin, Mrs. Alma Cruse, Mrs. Wilbur
Mc Combs, Mrs. Hazel Jeffrey.
