Last Saturday
Police Chief Gary L. Fry conducted the first police department
academy for children ages 7-14 with 93 children enrolled for the first
session with more expected to enroll this week. The purpose is to teach
them about city government, how the city operates and reason for each
city official's position.

Hemert elected Vice President of the Funeral Director’s Association.
Sgt Larry
Manifold received the Silver Star for Gallantry in action in
Vietnam. He is with 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry.
Gordon Chilcote
is the new President of the Hudson Jaycees, Others serving with him are
James Merillat, John Marry, Elmer Marry, L.C. Baker and John
Stuart.
Hudson Area Junior
and Senior High bands will present their First Annual “POPS” concert
April 30 at Miller School gym. A new and different type program will be
presented with the audience seated at attractively decorated tables
Music will be a light popular type with music from the gaslight era,
Broadway shows, marches, songs by Cole Porter and Up-Tempo tunes. Light
refreshments will be served. There is no admission charge, so come and
enjoy some good musical tunes.
Rev. G E Miller,
pastor of Wesleyan Methodist Church, has submitted his resignation
effective at close of church year, Aug 1967. He came here 14 years ago
from Williamston and during his ministry the new church bldg at corner
Hill and N Wood St was built and they have enjoyed considerable growth .
An Art Fair and
Open House was held last Sun at Sacred Heart School with 75 parents
attending. Teacher conferences were also held.
Barbara Hart,
a Junior at Addison high school has been accepted in Youth for
Understanding Program and will go to Germany.
Mrs. Paul Knipp
was elected President of the S. Hudson Woman’s Club, The meeting was
held at the home of Mrs. Richard Walters with 27 members present.
Other officers are: Mrs. Leona Huffman, Mrs. Robert Marry, Mrs. Fred
Fish, Mrs. James Hartley. The annual salad smorgasbord was enjoyed.
Students from
Hudson High, Candance Hathaway, Linda Prater, and Becky
Hackett attended the Future Homemaker of America.: State convention
April 20 and 21 in Grand Rapids.
The Youth
Fellowship at the First Methodist Church will hold a “Jalopy Hop", this
Sunday at Fellowship Hour at the church. Members will drive around and
pick up Junior and Senior High youth in a “Come as You Are” attire.
Carolyn Marie
LaCourse and Clifford L Delaney were married April 16 at the
First Baptist Church by Rev. T R Dolson.
Marcia Milliman
and Pfc Louis Rechis are engaged and plan a fall wedding. Pfc
Rechis is a MP in the army at Ft Belvior, Va.
Lynette Sue
Jacob and Richard Dee Merillat are engaged and plan a July 22
wedding.
Local births
include: a daughter, Terri Lynn, to Mr. and Mrs. Bill Bower; and
a son to Mr. and Mrs. James Valentine of Fayette.
Pfc Mike
Brennan graduated from cooking school at Ft Knox, KY and will report
to Ft Dix, N J after week’s leave at home

Garnhart will report April 25 to Aan Diego, CA to go to Vietnam.

Ernie L Prater
is the winner of the 1967 DeKalb Agricultural accomplishment award given
to the outstanding senior in the vocational agriculture department.
A tornado alert
disrupted the School Girls Athletic Association carnival last Friday
night. However they still had good crowd in attendance.
There was a photo
of a group of boys and girls who were winners of the Kite flying
contest last Saturday. The winds nearly ruined the flying kites but a
few kites managed to survive and win trophies.
A public hearing
was held by City Council on Tuesday evening regarding installing
sanitary sewers on Maple Street. Five of the 13 individuals who own
property on street were present. As a result of the hearing, council
will obtain engineering and cost estimates and another hearing to advise
property owners will be held.
There are three
positions open for School board and the annual school elections will be
held June 12. Two positions are for four yrs and one for three years.
Peter Koval
will be the Recreation Director for Hudson for the summer months
beginning June 19.
Phyllis Jane
Dennis and Donald E. Kern are engaged and plan a fall
wedding.
Linda Lea
Johnston and Pvt. Verlon Shuler of Franklin, NC are engaged
and plan an early summer wedding.
Sp/4 Lawrence
Meredith is stationed at Fort Sill, Okla. and was recently promoted.
He is in the ammunition and heavy truck department.
A daughter,
Kellie Sue was born to Mr. and Mrs. Russell Blurton at Foote
Hospital in Jackson.
Donald
LaFollette, electrician 3rd class in serving aboard the USS Jenkins
and is going on a 6 month cruise visiting Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and
the Philippines.
300 parents and
relatives attended the 8th grade skit presented by Mr. Leslie Reynold’s
history class.
Local births
include a son to Mr. and Mrs. Larry Reinick of Osseo.
David L Barrett
Jr has been named to the Dean’s List at Northern Michigan University
at Marquette, MI. He is a junior majoring in accounting and minoring in
business.
The play “Plenty
of Money” will be presented May 5th and 6th at Hudson Area High School
gym. The play is full of many musical numbers and those participating
are: Carol Wilson, Lynn Bailey, Kathi Freeborn, Candy Hathaway, Greg
Graves, Duane Marry, Tom Gamble, Rick Rodehaver, Anthony Foster, Tom
Cunningham, George Nuoffer, Doug Cunningham and Todd Driskill.
120 women attended
the annual Spring Luncheon Buffet Style salad smorgasbord at the
Methodist Church last Wednesday.
Hudson FHA and FFA
held their 6th annual banquet on April 11 with 200 in attendance. Sheila
Bender of FHA was Toastmistress and Toastmaster for FFA was Brad
Butts.
Hudson Jaycee’s
auxiliary held their second meeting with the Hillsdale Jaycee Auxiliary
on April 17, with 7 members present from Hudson. It was held in the
community rooms of the Hudson State Savings Bank branch bank.
April 13 1967
A large audience attended the l8th annual Parade of Harmony on April 9
at Miller school gym. The Hudson Barbershoppers looked splendid in
multi-colored jackets and dark trousers. Singing included “Here We Come”
directed by Charles Goll. E.A.”Van” VandeZande was Master
of Ceremonies. “The Last Remains”, an instrumental group from Hillsdale,
entertained with pre-show music. Others were the “Notations” quartet
from Battle Creek, “Meadow Larks” , a women’s group from Toledo, the
Jackson Barbershop chorus, and the “Citations” in their second
appearance from Louisville. The after glow was held at American Legion.
There was a photo
of three new members being sworn into city council: Irene Borton,
Dale Cosgrove and Robert Goodrich were sworn in by city
clerk Wayna Hutchins. There was also a photo of Robert
Onweller, former mayor, passing the gavel to new mayor Harlow
Eastman.
Over 60 attended
an Open House at the Public library on April 10. The 4th hour American
history class taught by Ray Fontana have spent many hours
reorganizing library, and cleaning and painting the museum in basement
of library. There was a photo of Mr. Fontana looking at some of the
shelves of items at library.
Sixth student
Tom Gamble has been chosen to travel to Europe and Japan this summer
with Youth for Understanding.
There was a photo
of a new city truck which the city ordered last fall has arrived and
went into service last week.
Mrs. Melvin
Evenson has been elected president of Hudson Woman’s Club. The
meeting was held at the home Mrs. Mary Foster. Others serving
with her are: Mrs. Roland Liesman, First Vice President; Mrs.
Frank Mansfield, Second Vice President; Margaret Distler,
Secretary; Mrs. John Musson, Treasurer; Miss Ethel Hartley
Corresponding Secretary.
Pfc David L.
Shadbolt is now stationed with the 506th Field Depot, 79th
Maintenance Battalion at Cholon, Vietnam.
Pvt Dennis P
Valentine of Clayton has been assigned to Co. B of the 56th Supply
and Service Battalion near Baumholder, Germany.
The Hudson Woman’s
Club met with Mrs. George Robey with 24 members present. The
program presented by Mrs. Dorsa Liby.
The Hudson Area
junior high band attended the Distrct 8 solo and ensemble Festival in
Jackson on April 8. Students receiving first district rating in solo
event were: Jean Fox, David Klinger, and Janice
Gardiner. Those receiving second division solo were Norma Little,
Sandra Shipman, Ruth Dunn, Mary Newton, Dan Pittenger, Terry Close,
Steve Rowe Mike Anderson, Rosalee Moore, Mark Shipman and Glen
Perkins. Cora Sanford received a third division rating.
Gregory A
Graves has received word he’s been selected to receive a 4 year army
ROTC scholarship.
Connie Thomas
of Morenci and Steve Swander of Hudon were married April 8 at the
First Methodist Church in Morenci by Rev. Larry Hutchinson of
Detroit, cousin of the bride.
Linda Jacobs
and Mathew Ringqvist of Clayton were married April 8 at St. John
Lutheran Church by Rev. G. P. Dobberfuhl.
Jean Siegel
and Donald Letherer were married Palm Sunday at the Wesleyan
Methodist church by Rev. Olson Clark of Hastings.
Ann C.
Hendrickson of Hudson and AS/4C Ralph W. Jack were married
April 1 at Holy Family Church in Copperas Cove, Texas.
Mrs. James
Grill was elected President of the Friday Club at a meeting held at
Lenawee Country Club with 21 members present.
Madeline Arlene
Nichols and Ronald Jay Taylor of Allendale are engaged and
plan and a 1968 winter wedding.
Local births
include a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Herman Risner of Waldron and a
daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Francis Borch of Manitou Beach.

There was a very
good turn out at the city Election last Monday and there was elected a
new mayor and three new councilmen. They were Mayor-Harlow Eastman and
councilmen Robert Goodrich, Irene Borton; and Dale Cosgrove. Mrs. Borton
is the first woman elected to council.
Another group to
participate in The Parade of Harmony by the Hudson Barbershoppers will
be the Sweet Adelines from Toledo, along with the “Citations” from
Louisville, KY and the “MeadowLarks” from Toledo.
Hudson's Thorn
Hospital has a financial problem according to a communication from
Administrator Walter Teeters and board chairman Wayne Throne. Accounts
receivable now total $76,000 which is primarily from treatment of
Medicare patients. The loss of payment is placing a serious burden on
hospital.
Five Junior
students of Hudson area schools have been accepted by Youth for
Understanding Program to spend two months this summer in foreign
countries. They are: Ilah Borton - Finland; Jim Liesman - Japan;
Harriet
Sherman - Ireland; Barbara Eady - the Netherlands and Dennis Ames
- Urugary - S. America.
The Hannan-Colvin
Post 180 American Legion and the Legion Auxiliary are sponsoring a 1st
annual Band Benefit Banquet on April 22. They will give the band the net
proceeds of one of their famous beef stew dinners to help raise funds
for the new band uniforms.
The high school
forensic team participated in the District competition Contest held at
Chelsea. Douglas Cunningham placed first in Extempore competition and
qualified for the regional district contest at Battle Creek on April 12.
Entering for the first time and presenting the third act of “Our town”
by Thornton Wilder in a new area of forensics called multiple reading
were: Roger Anderson, Richard Sanborn, Tom Gamble,
Bob Mayer,
Linda Patterson, Kathi Freeborn, Nadine Meredith, and
Susan Ebbitt. They
won 2nd place. Candy Smith placed 3rd in serious interpretation and
Barbara Eady 4th in original oratory.
Brown Funeral Home
has been accorded membership in the Order of the Golden Rule for third
consecutive year.

has arrived home from Korea on a 30 day leave.

Petty officer 2/C Ronald Double were married March 24 at Brookwood
Baptist church in Jacksonville, N C.
Sharon Kay
Allegaier Madison, S.D. and Lt. Lawrence K Goodsell are engaged, Miss
Allegaire RN is the school nurse in Little Falls, Minn and Lt. Goodsell
is serving in air force station at Kadena Air Force Base in Okinawa. No
wedding date has been set.
Seaman recruit
James H. Embach USN graduated from 9 weeks Navy basic training at Great
Lakes Training Center.
