Hudson’s new Teen Center will open Oct 31 with a gala Halloween Party
for teenagers of the community. The Teen Center is located in the
former Kroger Egg Exchange building on S. Church St. now owned by Mr.
and Mrs. A B McGehee.
Fire
and smoke caused considerable damage to Kay’s Restaurant Wednesday
forenoon, when fire discovered near front of the building in the attic.
Mrs Effie Julian is the owner.
Joe
Eagle was elected President of Kiwanis at their annual meeting held
Oct. 3. Other officers are: President elect - Douglas Ferman;
Vice President - Dennis Jodis; Treasurer - Mike Sweezey;
Secretary - James Keen; and directors - Richard Goodrich,
Louis Murdock and Jack Zimmerman.
The 2nd
Annual gun safety clinic sponsored by Hudson Kiwanis Club was held Sat
at the Oakley Zimmerman farm south of Hudson on US-127. It’s
intended to acquaint youth with correct handling and use of firearms.
Edward N Lawrence has been appointed National Sales Manager for
Hoover Bathroom Accessories of Fowlerville, MI. He is a native of
Hudson.
Army
Sgt. Tom L Chapin of Pleirku Vietnam was awarded the Combat
Infantryman Badge, the mark of distinction for the Fighting soldier.
Tech.
Seaman David J. Gardiner USN is serving aboard the 7th fleet
destroyer USS Leary off the coast of Vietnam.
Airman
apprentice Gary E Taylor USN graduated from Aviation Mechanical
Fundamental school at Naval Air Training Center at Memphis, Tenn.
Local
births include: a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Glann Keith of Osseo;
and a son to Mr. and Mrs. George Stalhood of Osseo.
Hudson
Tigers chalked up win No. 5 when they beat Addison 32-0. Toole scored 19
pts and picked up 189 yds in 28 carries and Terry Ireland had 81 yds in
16 carries. Stacy Campbell made 12 tackles. Others mentioned included
Hill, Mansfield, Gregg, Cunningham, Houser and Monahan.
Jacqueline Sprague received the 4-H Achievement Leadership award and
the cook book award as the selected 4-H member representing the County
Food Contest.
The
Annual “Harvest Festival” for the South Hudson Women’s Club was held at
home of Mrs. Dorsa Liby with 21 present. Mrs Robert Marry
acted as auctioneer for the sale of the harvest items.
A
daughter, Angela Gail, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Brian Holmes of
Jackson. The mother is former Shirley Coman.
Open
Door Bible Church will hold their First Homecoming on Sunday Oct 29.
Charter members will be recognized in the morning service. Rev. Ron
Lawrence, pastor will have morning service with a Fellowship dinner
following and at 2:30 PM there will be a special service with former
pastor, Rev. Wm Suk. Special music will be by the Gospel Lantern
Quartet and the Max Munk Family. The first church service was
held at the former Lane School, on west M-34. They later moved to
present location.
Exchange students of Hudson High School who spent the summer in foreign
countries through "Youth for Understanding" were speakers at the PTA
meeting Monday night at Miller School. They were Ilah Borton,
Barbara Eady, Tom Gamble, Jim Liesman and Karriet Sherman.
The
Hudson Area School Board met at a special session on Oct. 23 with 23
citizens attending. President John Timms discussed many of
problems facing the district.
Mrs.
N. A. Gibbs, and Donald Talmadge installed in a beautiful
installation ceremony as Worthy Matron and Worthy Patron for Lenawee
Chapter of the OES. Mr. Timothy Guest sang several sacred
selections.

dinners were served at the Sacred Heart Church annual homecoming dinner
last Sunday in spite of it being a rainy day.
Hudson
Tigers won their 4th game against Madison 26-0. Chris Hill caught
a 30 yard pass from Rick Rodehaver and Don Toole made an
extra point. Stacy Campbell made the next score with a pass from
Rodehaver to Chris Hill. Ireland led in rushing with 63 yeards in 10
carries followed by Campbell and Toole. Rodehaver was the outstanding
player with completion of 4 out of 7 passes and 2 going to touchdowns.
Mrs.
Frank Mansfield was re-elected president of the Thorn Hospital
Auxiliary. Others serving with her are Mrs Robert Cisco, Mrs
Reuben Wornstaff Jr, Mrs Harry Stults, and Mrs Wm Garland.
New
scout patrol leaders elected by Boy Scout Troop 2 are Bob Good-rich,
Dave Knox, Rick Lemons, John Enerson and
Tom Fowler.
Lynette Sue Deline and George R Davis are engaged and plan a
Nov 25 wedding.
Sharon A. Daly and Larry Dean Stiverson are engaged, but no
wedding date is set.
Local
births include a son to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Furst of Hillsdale, a
daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Jack Kuhn of Manitou Beach, and a
daughter, Jill Lynn, born to Mr and Mrs. Russell Ingram of
Hillsdale.
Jean
Loraine Uhler of Munson and Glenn E Harlan of Wauseon were
married at Church of Christ in Fayette on Oct 6.
Kathleen V. Benton of Saginaw and Lawrence L Haight are
engaged and plan a June 8, 1968 wedding. Lawrence is the son of Mr
and Mrs. Wayne Haight former residents of Hudson
Mr.
and Mrs. Lee Harden will observe their 50th anniversary on Oct 20.
Lee and Ethel Smith were married Oct 20, 1917 in Hillsdale and they are
the parents of 5 children.

Jaycees
plan a Halloween Party on Oct 31 to be held at Main Four Corners at 7:30
PM. Prizes will be given for funniest, ugliest, prettiest, most
original, youngest and best couple. In case of rain the party will be
at Miller School.
Former
resident Mrs. Louis (Betty Fontaine) Schulte 39, died at Santa
Ana, Cal. She was a Hudson graduate of 1946.
A
farewell party will be held for Patricia Hart, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Phillip. B. Hart, a nurse who will leave for Samoa for 2
years with Peace Corps.

Zimmerman on N Maple Grove north of cemetery; Jack Donaldson
on Buchanan St; Duane Murphy on Tiffin St; Arthur Freeborn
on Tiffin St; Walter Hutchings on N. Meridian Road and purchased
by John Beal; 2 new houses on Water St. built by Roger Aldrich
and Duane Metter; Arthur Reuter who purchased the one
built by students; the Nellie Jay home on Lincoln St and the
Clyde Donaldson home at corner Washington and Oak St. Rev Joe
Filonowicz is building on the East Side and Sam Rutter has a
remodeled home on Howard St. Several others are also remodeling.

The
local Jaycees hosted the Jaycee District 25 fall meeting on Oct. 4 at
the newly remodeled K. of C. Hall with a roast beef dinner. Ron
Kelly, District 25 membership chairman presented pins to those
members in district who brought in new members. The speaker was Pat
Duggan, president of the Michigan Jaycees.
Mrs.
N. A. Gibbs was elected Worthy Matron at the Annual meeting of the
Lenawee Chapter Order of The Eastern Star. Donald Talmadge was
elected Worthy Patron.
Mrs.
Karl Gardiner was hostess for the Century Club with 13 members and 4
guests. Program was Mrs. Edith Haviland of Adrian, dressed as her
aunt, Laura Haviland. She discussed all the work she had done
during the Underground Railroad days.
The
farm owned by Mrs. Fern Sawyer Burdick on Packard Rd has been
designated a ‘Centennial farm'.
The
former Kroger Egg Exchange Building on S. Church Street owned by Mr.
& Mrs. A. B. McGehee, with assistance of police chief Gary Fry
is being fixed over as a Teen Center for a place of entertainment with
dancing planned. Some items are needed and the public is encouraged to
offer assistance. Local businesses have already donated toward the
building along with police personnel helping in their free time to fix
it up.
Torpedoman's Mate William H. Mackey is serving on the destroyer
USS Black off the coast of Vietnam.
Electronics Technician Seaman Richard L. Speaker Jr. USN, is
serving aboard the guided missile armed destroyer USS John King, and is
presently located at Portsmouth, Va.
Hudson
Tigers beat Jackson Northwest 26-6. They scored in every period to
dominate play. Dan Toole stood out in carrying the pigskin. He picked up
115 yds in 25 carries.
Fireman
Gary A. Shadbolt USN is serving aboard the landing ship USS
Pitkin County off the coast of South Vietnam.
A
daughter, Jane Elizabeth was born to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Goll
of Anaheim, Calif.
Rev.
Lowell Shreve of Palmyra is the new pastor of the Rollin Friends
Church.
Seaman
Recruit George P Bluntschly of USN graduated after 9 weeks
training at Great Lakes Training Center.
Shirley Jane Julian of Pittsford and Jerry L. Aiken of
Midland MI were married Sept. 16 at St. Paul Lutheran church in
Hillsdale.
Local
births include a son to Mr. and Mrs. Paul Merillat.
Patricia Ann Clark of Midland and John Phillip Pear are
engaged and plan a December wedding.
George McDowell arrived home from Vietnam. Relatives and friends
held a welcome for him at Open Door Bible Church and his daughter
Tracie Lee was dedicated in a public service that day.
Sacred
Heart Church Annual Homecoming Dinner will be Oct. 15, serving country
style chicken for $1.75 adults and 75¢ for children.
Hudson
Friday club met at the Lenawee Country club with 27 members present. The
club recently purchased a nurses station emergency oxygen machine with
funds raised last March with their hat sale on Sunshine Day
Aviation Electrician Mate 3/C John D. Inhulson USN has reported
to duty aboard the naval station Adak, Alaska on Sept 22.

There
was a story about Bean Creek Nature Sanctuary purchased by Eastern
Michigan Nature Association. It is a 55 acre of densely wooded bottom
land cut off from other farmland by a meandering loop of Bean Creek.
Opening Day for sanctuary which the public is invited to will be Oct 8.
The land was purchased from Mr. and Mrs. John Kuenzer. There were
a couple pictures of Kevin Monahan, age 7, dreaming of the day
when Indians roamed the area lounging on a log along the creek.
Hudson
Center Grange held an Appreciation dinner at Clayton Methodist Church to
honor the many people who contribute to the success of the Grange Fair.
There was a surprise recognition to Mr. and Mrs. Don Bills and
plaque given Mr. Bills by Wayland Hart. Mr Hart gave a brief
history of the Hudson Grange fair from its beginning in 1950 to present
day. Hudson Fire Chief Wes Camp received a check for $429.95
which is the net profit from the fair from Don Bills.
The old
Hudson Hotel on North Church will be razed in a controlled fire by the
Lenawee County Fireman Association next Sunday morning. The hotel was
extensively damaged by fire last spring and can’t be rebuilt. It is an
old landmark, two stories by 100ft by 30 feet and had 38 rooms. The fire
will enable the public to watch to see first hand the different types of
equipment used in such a fire. This is fourth such burning the county
fireman. have done. Eleven years ago a house was burned behind Sacred
Heart Church and was one of the first projects.
Judy
Lynn Robins of Waldron and Larry M Sines of Pittsford were
married at the First Methodist Church in Hudson by Rev Affiand
Liesman.
There
was a photo of Mrs. Robert VanAuken and her 2 tomato plants that
grew to top the 11 foot mark at her Aldrich Street home and has produced
tomatoes for several weeks.
Peggy Ann Stuttz and James Duff Jr. are engaged and plan an
November wedding.
Cherrie Lynn Haight and Frederick Henry Foerster III are
engaged and plan an summer 1968 wedding. She is daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Wayne Haight formerly of Hudson.
Sue
Frye and Leslie Waldfogel were married Sept. 30 at the First
Baptist Church in Hillsdale by Rev. W Truman Cochrane.
Mr.
and Mrs. Dean L. Clark of Waldron will observe their 25th
anniversary with Open House on Oct 15 at Waldron High School. They have
5 children and 3 grandchildren.
The
second “Hudson Heritage” house is underway at a site on Lincoln Street.
It is a three bedroom ranch style and instructor Ray Kopp has two
groups of boys on project, one group in the morning and one group in the
afternoon.

Glenn Schulte arrived home from Elmendorf AFB Alaska to spend 30
days with parents Mr. and Mrs. George Schulte and other
relatives.
Mr.
and Mrs. James Tibrill will observe their 25th anniversary on Oct.
3. They are parents of 3 children.
Hudson
Tigers staged a dramatic fourth period touchdown drive against the
Hillsdale Hornets Friday night and won 13-0. Coach Saylor praised his
strong defense unit with fine playing of defense lineback Charles
Mansfield and defensive tackle Jim Sweigart. Terry Ireland
on offense carried 24 times for a total of 134 yards. Dan Toole
carried 21 times for 97 yards. There was a photo of Sweigart, Ireland
and Mansfield.
Local
births include a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton Gilbert of
Cement City.
