November 30 2007

Ilah Borton has been selected the DAR Good Citizen of Hudson Area High School.

City Council gave the go ahead to submit bids for a new fire truck for use in the city. No specifics yet, but is to have a 1,000 gallon per minute pump. The fire department no longer has use of its tanker, which is unsafe to operate on highway. The two other major pieces of equipment for fire fighting are a GMC (now 30 years old) and a Ford truck which is 18 years old. The pride of the department is  the new emergency vehicle.

Hudson PTA is sponsoring a Talent Show for its December meeting to be held Dec. 18 at Miller School.

The school gym was a busy scene Nov. 22 with Pilgrims and Indians much in evidence. The program was presented by 3 history classes; other classes also contributed to the program.

Santa will arrive Friday night and downtown is a canopy of brightly colored lights arching across Main Street. Stores are also decorated with displays of gifts and toys. The Hudson Kiwanis will be on street Friday and Saturday selling  the Annual Newspaper Edition with proceeds going to Christmas baskets for needy families.

Mr. and Mrs. N. Richard Smith returned from a cruise to Nassau aboard the SS Bahama Star.

Tiger basketball opened the season by defeating Onsted 61-54. Top scoring was by Jim Sweigart with 16 pts, and John Davis and Gary Peacock with 11 and 10 pts respectively.

The Hudson Wrestling team is ready for their first meet with Michigan Center this week. The returning letter men are: Jerry Mc Cullough (95 #); Dave Duncan (103#); Ray Kier (112#); Chan Barrett (127#); Roy Sterling (138#); Ed Van Buskirk (145#) and Claude Van Zandt (154#). Paul Palpant is the coach.

2nd Lt Joseph J Horwath is a the 3rd Hdg Co. 10th Aviation School at Fort Banning, Ga on Nov 2. He’s from Waldron.

Army Sp/4 Glenn W Myers of Pittsford has arrived in Vietnam with 198th Light Infantry Brigade.

Local births include a daughter, Rebecca Sue to Mr. and Mrs. Glen Keith of Pittsford and a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Paul of Jackson.

Pvt E-2 James Wortman of Osseo completed training at Ft Eustis Va. He is now on duty in Cambodia area.

Susan Jane Merillat and James Bower of Manitou Beach were married at Manitou Beach Bible Church on Nov. 25 by Rev Jack Nicholson.

Mary Ann Curth of Frontier and Charles O. Schmucker of Pittsford were married at Frontier Methodist Church by Rev Ken Karizen.

Mr. and Mrs. Ellery E Clark will observe their 45th anniversary Dec. 3 at their home in Pittsford. Emma Beatrice Roesener and Ellery Ellsworth Clark were married Nov 30, 1922 at Frontier, MI and have 2 children and 4 grandchildren.

Police Chief Gary Fry was honored Saturday night at the Teen Center when he was presented with a plaque inscribed  in appreciation of his understanding and thanks by the "Teens of Hudson".  Mike Stump made the presentation. There were 200 teens present and music for dancing furnished by “Hysterics”.

Knights of Columbus sponsored the annual “Columbus Day” essay contest and the winners were 1st-Barbara Moore; 2nd, Cindy Rupley and 3rd, Mike Luma.

The Thanksgiving Club organized in 1879 once again supplied 30 needy families with Thanksgiving baskets. The 10 members are: Dr. L. E. Blanchard, Rex Brown, Homer Harper, James Mulvena, Robert Onweller, Joe O’Reilly, Frank Phelps, Cletus Rickenbaugh, E. J. Scovill, William G. Thompson and Mrs. Wayne Throne, honorary member.

Mr. and Mrs. Cyril J. Hartley will observe their 25th anniversary with an Open House on Nov 26. Cyril and Grace Zweidinger were married Nov. 26, 1942 at Sacred Heart Church. They have 3 children.

Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Collar will observe their 45th anniversary on Nov. 26 with Open House at their home. They were married Nov. 29, 1922 at Wheatland and are the parents of two daughters, 4 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

Pfc Michael Brennan is home for 4 days and is now stationed at Fort Dix, N J.

Donald Rickenbaugh left Nov. 14 for service in the Army and is stationed at Fort Knox, Ky.

Pvt James Jeffrey is home on a 14 day leave and wiIl report for duty at Ft Lewis, WA for further duty and training.

Sgt. Gene Elliot arrived home after a year’s duty in Vietnam and received his discharge in San Francisco on Nov. 14.

A son was born to Ronald and Cheryl (Guss) Buchler in Jackson on Nov. 19.

David J. Gardiner has been promoted to Sonar Technician 3/C aboard the US Destroyer Leary which is on duty off coast of Vietnam.

Tom Kushmaul of Waldron is serving in Chu Lai, Vietnam with the US Army.

Peggy Ann Stuttz and James Duff Jr. were married at Clayton Methodist church by Rev. John Deline.

Pamela Christine Wise of Pittsford and William James Smith of Hillsdale are engaged and plan a Dec. 9 wedding.

The Tiger Basketball team opens their season against Onsted Friday night. The returning lettermen are Mike Timms, Chris Hill, Dan Toole, Jim Sweigart, Gary Peacock, Mike Vanderveer and John Davis; they are the starting five. Friday night will also feature the second anniversary “Old Timer Night” with ex-Tiger players being introduced at half time.

Bill Dunn Ford Sales now states that their Parts and Service Department is open every night until 9:00 PM. They have an all night Wrecker Service and Emergency Road Service.

The Hudson Tigers beat Morenci 47-0 for their eighth straight win and Coach Saylor substituted freely during the second half. The JV Squad was also dressed for the game. Dan Toole captured LCAA and County Scoring honors with 114 pts on 16 TD’s 9and 18 extra pts out of 26  attempts. He set a new school record of 1,050 yds rushing and caught 10 passes. Hudson is now the 1967 Football Champions.

William P Halloran received 32nd degree in the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry in Detroit last weekend.

American Education week was observed at Lincoln school last week. Parents invited to visit certain classes. Every room had some activity recalling the history of schools in America, or emphasizing education of children today. On Nov. 10 the children observed Veteran's Day with a special assembly under direction Mrs. Velma Cunningham, elementary music teacher; and Mrs. Lorene Wise, principal.

Mrs. Ella Fenstemacher won a  first place $100.00 prize at the Thompson Savings Bank Open House. Other winners were: Pauline Mullaly, ($50); Wanda Van Auken, ($20); Susan Stump, ($10); Janice Hassenzahl, Mary Jean Randolph, Don W. Moon,  L. Newlin and Mrs. Wallace Waterburg (each $5.00). Over 1500 attended the Open House held in honor of the Bank’s 100th anniversary.

Orrin J Gregg has enrolled in Tri-State College, Angola, Ind in  the school of engineering.

The farm of Mrs. Matt Benner in Dover Township has been named a Centennial Farm.

There was a daughter born to Mr. and Mrs. Roger Rutan at Botsford General Hospital in Farmington. They live at Westland.

A local birth was a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Easler of Osseo;

The Thanksgiving meeting of the South Hudson Woman’s Club was held at home of Mrs. Lesta Fogelson. The speaker was Barnard Crittenden, who gave an interesting and informative talk about the Indians that once lived in the Hillsdale County area.

A daughter was born to Thomas and Judy (Cosgrove) Meredith in Jackson.

A/2C Dan Stucky is home on leave and left for Hamilton AFB and will be on duty in Thailand.

SP/4 Stephen Malarney received his discharge from army at Fort Dix, NJ on Nov. 8. He had been stationed past 15 months in Bamberg, Germany.

David J. McClelland of Pittsford and Phillip L. Klinger have been promoted to Pvt E-2 after completing basic training at Ft Knox, KY.

Dean E. Mohr received Master’s degree in Business Administration from Eastern Michigan University. He is a tax accountant with Consumer Power Co \n Jackson.

Dobbins Flower and Gift Shop to hold their Christmas Open House on Dec. 2 from 7-9 PM and Dec. 3 1-7PM

The Hudson Junior Varsity team are LCAA Champions with a record of 5 wins and no losses. Their overall record is 5-2.

Max Baxter, a senior at Idaho State University is member of the ISN football Warriors. He’s from Hudson and is majoring in history. He played prep football at Pittsford high school.

Ilah Borton was crowned Homecoming Queen during half time at the Jackson St Mary’s game by co-captains Chris Hill and Dan Toole. The Tigers made this year’s homecoming a big success despite the rain, snow and mud as they beat Jackson 19-6. This was seventh game they won this year. Tony Marry and Charles Mansfield were outstanding linemen and the top scorer was Dan Toole. He leads the county and the conference with 97pts., 14 TD’s and 13 extra points on 22 tries. He is just 38 yards shy of an even 1,000 yard rushing for 1 season, which is a new Hudson record. Junior Terry Ireland has 75 yards rushing this season. They will play Morenci here for their final game.

The Hudson Teen Club is now open daily Monday through Thursday 5-9 PM. Friday night will be a record hop for 8th grade and they will dance from 6:30 to 9:30 PM. For 9th grade and up hours are 6:30-12:30 PM. Saturday a band will be present and hours the hours will be the same as Friday. No admission charge. Sunday the Center is open 4 - 9:00 PM and no charges. Pizza will be sold Wednesday, Friday and Saturday for young people and the public. There was a long list business people who helped and contributed to the Teen Center.

Thompson Savings bank is observing their 100th anniversary. The bank has been a veteran factor in the affairs of community, surviving wars, panics and depression. During the “Banking Holiday,” a period of 1933, the bank remained open. It was founded by three Thompson Brothers. There was a long article about the family and the bank.

Local births include a daughter to Mr. and Mrs Cail Weber of Morenci; and twin daughters to Mr. and Mrs. Jack Toner of Pittsford.

Donald LaFollette is assigned to destroyer USS Jenkins, which recently completed a 6 months cruise of the West Pacific. He has been promoted to Electrician's Mate 2nd class. The ship’s home port is Pearl Harbor.

Judy Kay Russell and Harry R Webb Jr. are engaged but no wedding date has been set.

Marie E. Friedrich and Floyd Jack Young were married Nov. 4 at Sacred Heart church by Rev. Fr. G. R. Loewen.

There was a five generation picture of Mrs. Nettie Kincaid, her son Collen Kincaid, grandson Richard Kincaid, great-granddaughter Sherrie Williams and her baby, Kimberly Williams.

The Friday Club met at home of Mrs. W. H. Jawar with 24 present, along with three Federation officers. The history of the club was presented by Mrs. Alma Scovill and Mrs. James Baker. They were dressed in lovely black dresses styled according to those of years gone by. The club organized in 1883 and was the first in the city.

There was a Missionary Conference at Open Door Bible Church with the theme of “How Shall They Hear?” The speaker was Rev. Warren Bolthouse from radio station WIBM in Jackson. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Henderson, missionaries to Mexico, and several other missionaries were present and discussed their work in the mission field.

Dick Camp is the new owner of Dick’s Mobil Service at 328 W Main St. It was previously owned by Larry Wilder.

There will be a Veteran’s Day roast beef dinner on Sat., Nov 11 at the American Legion, as a benefit for the Hudson Teen Center. The cost is $4.00 per couple.

November 2 1967

The annual homecoming will be held at the football game this Friday. The Queen candidates are: Seniors: llah Borton, Carolyn Kline, and Karen Townsend. Juniors: Cindy Grill and Jolyn Monahan, Sophomores: Pam Cisco and Cyndie Keen; Freshmen: Mary Gregg and Sandy Kaiser. Heidi Rickert German Exchange student is an honorary member of court.

There was an article about Hudson native Louis Schulte from Anaheim, Calif. He is employed at Douglas Aircraft and active in aerospace program.

Lt. Wilburn Legrow, “The Singing Cop” from Big Rapids, will be at Hudson elementary school &.Sacred Heart School, to discuss bicycle safety. He will also appear at Baptist church in  two services on Sunday.

There was an article talking about the visit from Bureau of School Services from the University of Michigan, who evaluated the school and stated that the building, built in 1912, has a  reasonable good structure but has some major problems with the  roof. Total enrollment at the building is is 486. Some rooms are insufficient in size and inferior in quality.

With the cooperation of several parties the. Hudson Grange Fair Steer Project is off  to a good start. There was a photo of FFA members Mike and Roy  Sterling and Simon Sleutelberg and his son Arnold offloading a steer. This is the eighth consecutive year the Meyers Department Store has financed the steer project, with no interest charged to the boys. Other boys in steer project are: Albert Frese; Tom Niner, Norman Sweet, Roy Kier, Gay Ferguson, Gary Hutchison, Chuck Sweet, Dick Smoke, and David Sweet. The 12 steers spent the first week at the John Hutchison farm, and were checked by  veterinarian Dr. Fish of Addison.

Cheryl Marie Barrett and Fred W. Walters of Blissfield are engaged and plan a January Wedding.

Gerald Balis and Pam Moyer of Waldron were married in Chapel of Methodist Church in Hillsdale.

Mrs Emma Boord, aged 100 died at Thorn Hospital. She had earlier this year celebrated her 100th birthday as Hudson’s oldest citizen.

The Hudson Tigers beat Adrian Catholic Central 34-20. This win left Hudson as the only unbeaten team in the LCCA conference with a 4-0 record and two games to go.

Hudson Woman’s Club met in the Community Room of the Hudson State Savings Drive-in Bank. The guest speaker was Mrs. Richard Link of Fayette. She has been an art teacher for 20 years. She discussed as she painted a beautiful Michigan autumn picture scene.

James E. Warner was promoted to army Pvt E2 upon completion of basic combat training at Ft Knox, Ky. on Oct 6.

Marine Pvt Stephen J Curtis has completed 2 weeks training under simulated combat conditions in fundamental day and night patrolling and other Marine tactics at Camp Pendleton, CA.

Kenneth C. Zeller was promoted to Pvt E2 after completion of basic training at Ft Knox, KY Oct 6.

“Sons of Harmony” will be at Wesleyan Methodist church on Sunday for a Sacred Concert. They are from Flint and have made two previous appearances here.

A daughter, Amie Collins, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Barnes at Bixby Hospital.

Local births include a  daughter to Mr. and  Mrs. Richard Walch of Addison; and a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lindsey of Jonesville.

Miss Marieta Kamke is moving to Three Hills, Alberta, Canada where she will be working for the Prairie Bible Institute.

There were lots of pictures of the Teen Center which opened with a Halloween Party in a Grand Opening  Tuesday night on South Church St. There was an open house from 12 to 5 PM. The Kiwanis group attended during their noon luncheon meeting.  Approximately 300 attended. “The Chevron” of Blissfield, a popular teen age band provided music. Prizes for best couple were Laura and Rick Hazen, Funniest- Jeff Benjamin; most original- Joe Steele; Youngest-Meredith Wagner, Prettiest- Ester Sleutelberg and ugliest- Carolyn Marry.
