  December 28 2007

Fire destroyed a house on Nye Rd owned by Mr. and Mrs. David Mort. The house was in process of being remodeled and they had just moved into the home. Hudson fireman were assisted by Pittsford and Addison fireman.

The Journalism class from Hillsdale College were in Hudson recently asking various citizens out how much they read in local newspapers. One picture was of Mrs. George Bail being interviewed by a couple of the students. It was a very interesting article.

Communication Seaman Tim Tripp and his wife are spending 40 day leave with his mother Mrs. Helen Tripp. He is enroute to San Diego, CA,  where he will serve aboard the battleship USS New Jersey.

A daughter, Becky Marie, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Bills of Pullman, Wash on Dec 3. The grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Don Bills.

Spec. 5/c James Hallenbeck was discharged from the army on Dec 18. He’s served 1 year in Korea as a member of  the 593rd Transport Detachment.

Local births include a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. James Tew of Pittsford and daughter to Mr. and Mrs. William Nuoffer.

Hudson Metal Products supervisors held a Christmas party on Dec. 16 at Lenawee Country Club and the employees held their Christmas party on Dec 22 at the American Legion home.

A daughter, Renee Lee, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Poffenbarger at Valpariso, IN.

Pastor Ron Lawrence of Open Door Bible Church took four young people on a four day Retreat at Sarnia, Ontario, Canada.

Hudson Tigers Basketball Team beat Jackson St Mary’s 65-58 and are second in LCAA league.

December 21 1967

Dale R Berglund received the coveted Eagle Scout award at impressive Court of Honor ceremonies conducted by Hudson Boy Scout Troop 2 on Dec. 11.

Truman Ames graduated from Michigan State University on Dec. 2 with  a B S Degree in Packaging Technology.

Tom Brennan has been chosen Jaycee of the Month by the Hudson Jaycees.

Mr. R. L. Berlin, president of Metalloy Foundry, announced the appointment of Mr. C. E. Gibbons as general manager of foundry operations effective Jan. 1, 1968.

Adrian Catholic Central beat the Hudson Tigers last Friday 63-58. Adrian CC has a 4-0 record and Hudson has a 3-1 record. Mike Timms was the high scorer with 19 points.

The Hudson School Board met Dec. 18 to hear a presentation by a representative of the KMM architectural firm to discuss different building proposals regarding additions to the Clayton and Lincoln school buildings. Due to an increase of 200 students. more space will be needed. The high school will be grades 10-12, Miller grades 7-9 and both Lincoln and Clayton K-6.

The future of the Teen Club was discussed at special sessions of City Council. Chief Fry, who manages club states that it is growing each week. They have about 200 for Saturday night dances for Junior and Senior high students.

Carolyn Ann Dillon of Winter Park, FL and Robert Burns Edwards were married Nov. 25 at St. Charles Catholic Church at Winter Park. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Dillon, former Hudson residents.

The PTA talent show held Mon night at the Miller School gym was a great success and parents enjoyed a delightful 2 hours of great fun. Several prizes awarded for different age groups; For the K-7th grades it was 7TH grade Rick Hazen. and for 8th on up were the Munk sisters, Karen, Sharon and Susan for 1st prize.

400 attended the Annual Christmas Concert presented by the Senior and Junior high bands last Tuesday night.

Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Cashel will observe their 50th anniversary on Dec 27. They were married in Convoy, OH and lived on Elm Rd for 30 years, where they owned and operated the Clover Leaf Poultry farm for 30 yrs. They moved to Hudson about 6 yrs ago.

Pvt James Bailey of Ft Knox, Ky is home on a 16 day leave and MMC Frank Kerr is home from San Diego, CA over the holidays. He is serving aboard the USS Jouette, a guided missile cruiser that will leave Jan. 16 for Tonkin Bay, Vietnam.

E/1 Bernard Reuter is home on a 15 day leave and will return to Ft Knox, KY and E/2 William Goodrich is home for 15 days and will go to Ft Knox, KY on Jan. 2 for 3 weeks and then goes to Ft Lewis Wash, for duty overseas.

SP5 Steve Barkway arrived home from Germany and will join his wife and son who arrived here earlier this month.

Local births include a son to Mr. and Mrs. John Kingsley.

December 14 1967

Hudson Lumber Company was destroyed by fire last Tuesday night with a loss of between $60-70,000. The business was owned by Mr. and Mrs. John Huffman, who lived in quarters above the office at the east end of the building. The Hudson Fire Department was assisted by Pittsford and Addison. Mr. Huffman purchased the lumber company in 1953. It was originally owned by the Cruse family.

Mrs. Beverly Zimmerman was the recipient of Jaycees Auxiliary sponsored community service award. She was nominated by the Child Study Club. Mrs. Zimmerman is a vocational Home Economics teacher in Hudson schools.

The Hudson Area High School Band under the direction Gerald Blackburn and the Junior High Band under the direction of John Ashley will present their Annual Christmas Concert on Dec, 19 at high school gym.

Mike Brennan is home on 30 day leave and will leave Jan. 1 for Vietnam.

Col. Edgar Fenstemacher, recently retired after 28 yrs in service. He and his family plan to move to Calgary, Alta. Canada, where he has a position with the International YWCA.

Hudson Public Library has received funds for three years for reference books from the McGregor Fund of Detroit, administered by the Michigan State Library.

Patricia Ann Clark of Milan and John Phillip Pear were married Dec. 1 at Immaculate Conception Church at Milan.

The Hudson Woman’s Club held their annual Christmas party at Coscarelli's restaurant with 26 members present. Rev. & Mrs T R Dolson presented a short program with beautiful flanelgraph illustration of “Why The Chimes Rang.”

Recent births include: a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. William Davis of Clayton; a son to Mr. and Mrs. Dale Eichenberg of Pittsford; and a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. David Pfeifle of Pittsford.

Mrs. John Bertalon was elected Noble Grand of Lady Colfax Lodge. Others serving with her are: Mrs. Arthur Martin, Mrs. Glen Garland, Mrs. Wilbur McCombs, Mrs. Byron Mills, Mrs. Tessie Elkins, Mrs. Alma Cruse and Mrs. Glen Garland received the degree of chivalry.

The medical staff of Thorn Hospital hosted a festive Christmas Party at the American Legion post on Dec. 6 for hospital employees with a total of 75 present.

S/Sgt Norman Smith and his family arrived home from Turkey where he has been stationed the past 2 years. After the holidays he will report to Barksdale AFB Louisiana. He's been in the service the past 9 years.

Mr. and Mrs. William Klingler of Prattville Rd will be honored on Dec. 17 in honor of their 25th anniversary. William and Betty Baxter were married Dec. 25, 1942 and have 7 children and 1 grandchild.

The annual M & S Christmas dance will be Dec. 16 at Leo Miller school gym with music for dancing provided by Don Djerkiss and his orchestra. The public is invited to attend.

Hudson Tigers beat Addison last Friday 77-51 with Gary Peacock the top scorer with 24 points. They will face Adrian Catholic Central on Friday as Hudson and Adrian C.C. are both top contenders for LCAA basketball honors.

December 7 1967

Firemen from three departments battled a $15,000 fire Monday afternoon at the Meridian Road home of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Borton. The large 8 room home was gutted by flames and destroyed the contents despite efforts of Hudson, Addison and Pittsford Fire Departments.

How to get Maple Grove Cemetery on a self supporting or more balanced system of operation was the subject of much discussion at City Council meeting last Tues night.

The Knights of Columbus are sponsoring a pre-Christmas dance on Dec. 9 at 9 PM at the Council Hall. Music and calling are to be furnished by “Joe Karel”. The chairmen of event is Alvin “Gus” Kimling and Edward Hackett is Grand Knight of the Hudson Council.

A handsome new bulletin board in front of the Junior high school was presented to Principal Jack Zimmerman on Monday by members of the student council. The board was designed and built by the student council under the direction of Leslie Reynolds, shop instructor and student council advisor.

The Hudson Lions Club was formally organized at a meeting Nov. 29 at the conference room of Thompson Savings Bank. There were 16 members present along with Lions of Michigan State Secretary and President of the Adrian Lions Club. Officers elected were: President, Ralph Commenator, Secretary, Cecil Lawrence; Treasurer, Edward Bishop and charter night chairman Wendell (Buss) Olmstead.

Local births include: a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Harold Sheffer of Osseo; a daughter, Richelle Lee to Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Ruth of Manitou Beach; a son, Dal David to Mr. and Mrs. Dale Townsend of Monroe at Monroe Memorial Hospital.

Cheryl Lee Hagemyer and James H Hephner are engaged and plan a July 1968 wedding.

Diane Giddings and Douglas Rutan of Addison are engaged and no wedding date has been set.

Cheryl Kay Wasnech and Robert Phegley of Osseo were married Nov 23 at United Brethren Parsonage at Ransom by Rev. William Ensminger.

Deborah Dauber of Weston and Bill W. Marr of Waldron are engaged and will be married December 9.

Warren C Forbes of North Adams has been promoted to PVT E-2 after completing training at Fort Knox, Ky.

A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Bill Meredith of Cincinnati, OH on December 3.

A daughter, Mary Beth, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Ron Ball at Bixby Hospital. The mother is former Jennifer Camp.

The Hudson Tiger basketball team beat Madison 69-54. Sweigart and Peacock were the top scorers. They play Addison this Friday night.

Hudson Tiger Matmen opened their season last week and lost to Michigan Center 34-19.

95 Senior citizens enjoyed a bountiful dinner at the First Congregational church last Monday. Ten tables decorated with a Christmas theme by Mrs. Mable Ames. The seniors enjoyed a delicious ham and turkey dinner. A 20 lb. turkey donated by Joe O’Reilly. Mrs. Dora Bradstreet presented a short program on Christmas hymns and Christmas poems.

Door prizes at the Open House at the Posey Shop won by Irene Kerr, Dorothy Bartlett and Leota Hershberger.
