Reynolds 8th grade history classes visited the
Post Gazette and were given introduction into the operation of a
newspaper, utilizing cold type composition or offset print. The
students are currently studying newspapers with representatives from
daily papers from Jackson, Toledo & Adrian slated as speakers.
There
was an article about possibility of an artificial lake for Hudson
Township, and to be located in southeastern past of township. The lake
is to be about 800 acres and approximately 3 miles long and a mile at
its width.
Hudson
split a pair of non-league games during the past week. They defeated
Hillsdale 64-56 on Saturday and then lost to Vandercook Lake 68-60 on
Tuesday night. They will play Michigan Center next Tuesday night in
tournament play at Michigan Center, the Site of District #15 Class B
Basketball Tournament elimination.
New
officers for the Chamber of commerce are: President, Denis Jodis;
President elect, Jim Gardiner; Treasurer, Walter Rupp;
Secretary, Jack Donaldson.
Mrs.
C.L. Brown returned after a two weeks trip to Hawaii with a group
from the State Funeral Directors Association.
Donald E. Rickenbaugh has been promoted to Pvt E-2 upon his
completion of basic training at Ft Knox, KY.
Madeline Nichols and Ronald Jay Taylor of Allendale were
married Feb. 24 at the Wesleyan Methodist Church by Rev. Richard A.
Diesler and the bridegroom’s pastor, Rev. Carl A Coffey of
Allendale.
JoAnn Marie Brogan and David Harold Clemens of Taylor were
married Feb. 23 at Sacred Heart Church by Rev.
G. R. Loewen.
A son,
Mark Roger, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Roger Zimmerman of
Prattville, at Morenci Hospital.
Mr.
and Mrs. John Winn received a telephone call from their son John,
who is stationed in Vietnam. He is on R & R in Hong Kong.
Tech
Sgt. John (Jack) Williams is home on leave from Chanute AFB He’s
currently enrolled in a specialized guidance missile class prior to
becoming an instructor.
Mrs.
James Donaldson was the hostess to the Child Study Club. The speaker
was Mrs. Joe Filonwicz, who gave a talk about nursery school
she’s conducting at the Congregational church.
Mrs.
E. J. Scovill was the hostess to the Friday Club. The speaker was
Sheriff Richard Germond, who discussed the role the Sheriff’s
Department plays in law enforcement in Lenawee County.
Pfc
Gerald (Ed) Bump of Pittsford recently received his first class
rating and is now stationed at Ft Jackson, S.C.
A
daughter Angela Marie, was born to Mr. and Mrs. A1 Timberman of
Pittsford.

The
100th anniversary of Clayton School was observed last Thursday evening
at the school, sponsored by the PTA. It was also the 40th anniversary of
the PTA. A special tribute was given Mrs. Naomi Dowling, who is a
charter member, and wrote the history of the Clayton School from
1867-1967. There was a photo of Mrs. Dowling, a photo taken inside the
school rooms and a photo of a teacher is dressed in old clothing.
PFC
Joseph D. Marry has been assigned to Headquarters Detachment of US
Air Support Command in Vietnam as a driver.
Marine
Lance Corporal Daniel I. Bignell of Waldron is serving with 4th
Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine division in DaNang, Vietnam.
Fireman
had a big day last Monday with three fire calls. At 10: 00 AM the first
call was to North Maple Grove where workers were burning debris at the
site of the John Decker home and someone turned in the alarm.
Then a grass fire got out of control behind the A1-Ken Manufacturing
Company and swept across the field due to high winds. While they
were there the fireman got a call to a possible fire at the Warren
Crane residence two miles west of US-127 on Union Rd. Faulty
electrical wiring filled the house with smoke. Then on Tuesday afternoon
fireman extinguished a fire at a converted chicken coop being used as a
work shop at 704 N Maple Grove.
The
Tigers defeated Jackson St Mary’s 83-61. Jim Sweigart was the
sharpshooter with 20 points. Davis & Opsa1 tied with 13 points each.
Donna Jean Sheffer and Larry Beagle were married Feb. 16 at
Rollin Methodist Church by Rev. John Deline of’Clayton.
Gloria Jean Cantrell and Donald Parkhurst were married Feb 19
at Onsted Baptist church by Rev. Tom Potter.
Local
births include a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. John Hephner, a son to
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Wa1ter of Addison, and a daughter to Mr.
and Mrs. Allen Kennedy of Adrian.
Dick
Collins’ Real Estate Sales announces that Jim Caywood, owner and
Operator of Hudson Gas and Tire Co., is now a 1icensed real estate
salesman with his firm.
The
American Legion is sponsoring a Deep Freeze Feb. 24, It will feature a
chicken dinner and dancing to best bands of the nation on McGehee stereo
tapes. The cost is $5.50 per couple.
The
Century Club met with Mrs. Elizabeth Stewart with 11 members
present. Jim Liesman, a high school student who spent last summer
in Japan as an exchange student with Youth For Understanding was the
speaker.
A
memorial service was held for Mrs. Edith MacQueen by Mrs. Lois
Solomon.
The
Hudson Grange Fair will be held July 5, 6 & 7. It was announced by
Don Bills, fair manager.

46 Boy
Scouts were guests of the Kiwanis Club last Tuesday noon in observance
of National Boy Scout Week. Also present was Boy Scout Leader Henry
Berglund, assistant leader Herb Black and treasurer Bud
Fowler. Mr. Berg1und reported on the troop’s activities during the
year stating there are now 63 registered scouts, and activities are
scheduled over 165 days.
Four
Hudson high school students are to participate in the Youth for
Understanding Program this summer. They are: Kris Kunkle going to
Germany; Lynn Bailey to Denmark; Steve Freeborn to Sweden
and Monica Rising to Holland.
The
Hudson Lions Club held their first meeting since receiving their charter
at Coscarelli's Restaurant Monday night. The c1ub voted to purchase
three White Canes for use by 3 local residents and they will be
presented at the next meeting. President Commentor then explained the
program where used glasses can be distributed to many parts of the
world.
Adrian
Catholic Central beat Hudson 66-54 and took the LCAA crown. Adrian CC
was 10-O and Hudson is 7-3. There were three photos of the basketball
players on page one.
Russell E Timberman has been promoted to Army Pvt. E-2 after
completing basic training at Ft Knox, Ky.
Pvt.
Kenneth C. Zeller has been assigned to the 27th Transportation
Battalion of the 8th Transportation group nea, Qui Nhon, Vietnam as a
truck driver.
Pvt.
Allen D Huff has completed 9 weeks advanced infantry training at Ft
McClellan, Ala.
Jack
LaFollett left for the armed forces on Jan. 15 and is now stationed
at Ft Campbell, Ky.
Airman
Contro1man Airman Mack J Pettit USN is serving at the Naval Air
Station at Patuxent River, MD.
Pvt.
Edward D Richards Jr. is now assigned to Co A. 18th Battalion 5th
Brigade in the US Training Center, Armor at Ft. Knox, KY

William Mackey has arrived in San Diego following duty aboard the
destroyer, USS Black and will be stationed in San Diego until further
orders.

daughter Alicia Kay, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Bob Patterson of
Jackson. The grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. James Rozelle.
Donald LaFollett spent 20 day leave in Hudson after spending 19
months overseas. He returned to Pearl Harbor for further duty as an
electrician 2/c aboard the USS Jenkins.
The
Jaycee Auxiliary is sponsoring a Valentine Dance at the American Legion
on Feb 17. Music will be by Swanee and the Boys”. The cost is $2.00
couple and it begins at 8:00 PM.
Kyle
Benjamin has bought out his partner and now the sole owner of Pure
Pep Service Station.
JoAnn Marie Brogan and David Clemens of Taylor Mi are engaged
and will be married on Feb 23.
Pamela Ireland and Michael Stiverson were married Feb. 10 by
Rev. T. R. Dolson at the First Baptist Church.

Henry Bergland, Scoutmaster of Hudson Troop 2 was presented with the
Silver Beaver Award, the highest award given at council level, last
Saturday night at a recognition dinner at Dundee. In the past 26 years
of scouting, only 3 others local men have been so honored. They are
Burdette Peebles, Russell Coman and R J Kramer. (There was a
photo of Rus with Henry.)
Gerald Sprague, a science teacher at Hudson area schools for the
past 4 years, has resigned to accept the position of Safety Education
Consultant with Safety & Traffic Division of the Automobile Club of
Mich.
City
Council announced they have purchased the site of the former Hudson
Hotel as the location of the new municipal building. All NYC property in
the same block between Church and Market streets bordering Railroad
Street will be included in the city acquisition. The building is
expected to start later this year and will include city offices, the
police and fire department. The building is to face Church Street and
the five bay fire station to face Railroad Street. The old NYC railroad
track is yet to be removed.
Plans
for the bridges across Bean Creek (Jackson and Mechanic Streets) are
moving ahead, and they should be built later this year.
Newly
Incorporated L&N Manufacturing Company has added a new bar machine to
its line of production. They expect this will double their plant
production. There was a photo of machine with Don and Lucille Gibbs,
Onalee Mills and Jerry Overy, plant manager. The Gibbs
formed the company 25 years ago in Jan 1943; they presently employ
eleven people who work two 10 hour shifts.
Vandals
broke glass facing one side of the Town Clock over the weekend. It looks
like a BB shot that caused hands to stop. Charles Blanks said it
will take a while to repair the damage.
Mr.
and Mrs. Ceasar A. Bastien of Day Road celebrated their 60th
anniversary with a family dinner last Sunday. They are the parents of 12
children.
Born
January 30 at St. John Hospital in St Clair Shores to Mr. and Mrs.
John Connolly, twin sons The mother is the former Patricia
Hackett.
PVT
James Bailey graduated last Friday from basic training at Ft Knox,
KY and left Saturday for Ft Sill, Okla. to take more advanced training.
Girls
Scouts and their leaders were guest speakers at Hudson Womans Club
meeting held at the home of Mrs. Fred Stewart. Mrs. Reuben
Wornstaff Jr, neighborhood chairman, was in charge of the program.
Hudson
area schools reached all time high in enrollment as of January 19, 1968.
At the end of first semester there were 1548 students.
The
high school has 496; Miller School, 491; Linco1n, 354
and Clayton has 207.
Hudson
captured their first LCAA wrestling crown last Saturday when the first
LCAA wrestling tournament was held at Hudson High School. There was a
photo of the winning teams in this issue. The coach is Paul Pa1pant
and assistant coach Dave Rosendon.
Hudson
defeated Addison for their 7th league win in 9 starts. The score was
62-45. last Friday night.
Louise Dennis formerly of Prattville and Keith Cudney were
married December 30 at the First Presbyterian Church at Plymouth, MI.
Joyce Day and Stephen Malarney are engaged and plan an April
wedding.
Marjean Joughin and Michael Frantom of Hillsdale are engaged
and plan a September wedding.
Charlotte Holt of Clayton and Ernie Prater are engaged and
plan a June wedding.
Sylvia Dawn Arnuff of Detroit and Donald C. Smith of Hudson
are engaged and plan a September wedding.
Local
births include: a son to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Fuller; a son to
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Reeder; a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Beal;
a son to Mr. and Mrs. Leon Hockstedeler of Hillsdale and a

Phillip Klingler, who is temporarily stationed at Ft. Lewis,
Washington, spent a three day leave with Lear Fellows another Prattville
resident who now lives in Washington state.
Rev.
Joe Filonowicz gave an interesting talk to 91 members at the Seniors
Citizens meeting at the Congregational church about the Future of
Hudson. He discussed several projects in Hudson including the Youth
Center and painting of store fronts downtown.
Boy
Scouts in Hudson are observing the 58th anniversary of Boy Scouts in
America.

The
Hudson Area Adult Education Program is offering a wide variety of
classes this semester, with more than 25 classes to be offered.
Charter
Night for the Hudson Lions Club was observed last Saturday night with
250 members of surrounding area Lions Clubs attending. There was a photo
of Ralph Commenator, president of the newly formed club receiving
the club charter from the District Governor. Other officers are: First
Vice President, Wende1 Olmstead; Second Vice President Leslie
Raynolds; Third Vice President Robert B Goodrich; Secretary
Cecil Lawrence; Treasurer Edward W Bishop; Lion Tamer
Tom Green; Tail Twister Merle Butts; Assistant Tail Twister
Arthur Surtevant.
The
March of Dimes Benefit Auction held Saturday night raised $674. It was
sponsored by American legion with Walter Rupp, Chairman.
Phillip I Hart, Rt 2. Clayton is one of two Lenawee County farmers
who left yesterday from Detroit as part of a contingent of Michigan
farmers who will study farms and related programs during a five week
around the world trip. There was a picture of Phil with a map showing
the area he will visit in Pakistan for five days.
Denis Jodis and Gordon Chilcote are to head Michigan week
activities here in Hudson during Michigan week in May.
There
was a photo of two Lincoln School fifth grade band members and others of
Miller School 5th graders and Clayton 5th graders There was a nice group
of youngsters in the band.
James D Driskill, a senior at Adrian College did his student
teaching in civics at Adrian secondary school for the fall semester
which ended Jan 19,

Michael C. Brennan has been assigned to the 71st Artillery near Cam
Ranh Bay, Vietnam as a cook.
PVT
C Jeffrey Hassenzahl is stationed at Ft Campbel1, KY and PVT
Douglas Hassenzahl is stationed at Fort Devens Mass.
The
Sweezey-Rickenbaugh-Scovill Insurance Agency for the Hartford
Insurance Company has been in Hudson for 100 years. There was a photo
and big ad congratulating them. (I am sure it meant the agency has been
here for 100 yrs- not the men!)
Hudson
beat Madison 79-62. Sweigart, Peacock and Opsal provided the fire power
with the trio netting 16 points each.
American Legion post 180 is sponsoring a Family Fish Fry and Spaghetti
and Meat sauce dinner on Feb 2. The cost is $1.25 and children 50¢ each.
Madelene Nichols was honored at bridal shower given by ladies of the
Wesleyan Methodist church. She will marry Ron Taylor of Allendale
on February 24.
