March 28, 1968

Fire destroyed a large barn on Raymond Bowers farm located three miles north of Hudson on US-127 last Monday evening. Fireman from Hudson, Pittsford and Clayton assisted at the fire. Two yearling cows, a tractor and attached corn picker, a silo and barn full of 15,000 bales of hay and straw and complete dairy equipment were destroyed.

At a special council meeting last week, many questions were asked pertaining to budget needs for the Police Department. Chief  of Police Gary Fry stated if cuts are made he will terminate his operation of the Hudson Teen Club,  a project he and other members of his dept inaugurated last fall during off duty hours. Police chief salary is $6,450; patrolmen start at $5,300, and after 6 months get $5,650. Increases for next year calls for Chief - $7,500, 2 patrolmen - $12,000, 2 dispatcher $8,000 and a relief officer, $3,000, police sergeant $6,200. Other budget needs were also discussed.

Mr. and Mrs. Walter Teeter have received confirmation of the death of their son, Lance Corporal Gary Teeter, aged 20 yrs, who died Jan. 8 in Vietnam. He had been reported missing in action in a helicopter crash near Don Ha, South Vietnam. Mr. Teeter is hospital administrator for Hudson and Morenci hospitals.

About 25 Jaycees and others are painting the walls at the public library. The painters turned out last Saturday and in record time had accomplished their job after Bob Spotts had put finishing touches on ceiling the day before. Several photos of the group doing the great job, both men and women were there.

Marine Lance Corp. Daniel L. Bignell of Waldron, is serving with 3rd Battalion 11th Marine Regiment of 1st Marine Division in Da Nang, Vietnam.

Linda Mae O’Connor of Arlington, Va and Paul Earnest Robinson of Arlington, were married March 9 at Fort Meyers North Post Chapel  in Ar1ington. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert O’Connor of Hudson. She is employed in the Navy Department in Arlington. The groom employed with the Navy and stationed at the Pentagon in Washington DC.

A daughter Nicole Ann was born at Bixby Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. George Winn of Adrian. The grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. John Winn of Hudson.

The farm owned by Mrs. Edith A Cadoo of RR #1 Clayton has been designated as  a Centennial Farm by the Michigan Historical Commission. The farm is located in Dover Township and originally was purchased by James Cadoo, father in law of Mrs. Edith Cadoo in 1865.

The Friday Club met at the library with 18 members for their Sunshine Day meeting. Members presented a book or money to the library as a token of the day and also gave $20.00 to  the Girl Scouts. A tour of the library was then taken.

The Lincoln Mothers Club met at home of Mrs. S. Jenkins on Church St. The program was the Town and Country Clothing Store in Hudson, who presented a lovely style show. The program narrated by Mrs. Wava Deline and Mrs. Bonnie Garland. Mrs. Rita Swan and Mrs. Simon Sleutelberg presented all the creative outfits, and kept crowd busy and interested in the latest fashions.

March 21 1968

53 Boy Scouts of troop 2, will canvas the city and rural area next week to find people to subscribe to the Hudson Post-Gazette. The top subscription salesman will receive a new sleeping bag for over night Scout functions. There was a photo of Scouts Dave Knox, Rick Lemons, John Enerson and Joe Kishpaugh checking their subscription lists.

In a special meeting city Council chose the following nominees for the newly created Hudson Building Authority. They are John Timms, Richard Berlin and Dorr Lillywhite. Council also appointed Edward Wolf to fill the unexpired term of office for Bruce Coleman, who had resigned effective at the end of March.

Max D. Sayre announced his retirement as chairman of Board of Directors of M&S Manufacturing Company effective April 1, 1968. He was one of the founders with A. B. McGehee, who retired in 1956. He was president and chief executive officer until 1965 when Dorr Lillywhite was named president. Other officers are D. I. Murdock and VP; R. M. Stab1er-.Secretary. Other directors in addition to officers are E. B. Borton, G. W. Fiddyment, W. H. Jawar and K. I. Lewis.

State Representative Robert C. Stites, representing the 40th District, announced his intention to seek re-election to his state house seat. (He is formerly from Hudson.)

There was a photo of NYC railroad workers removing rails in the city and in near future all track from Clayton to Hudson will be gone. The last regular scheduled passenger train through Hudson was about 1948. At one time the life of community revolved around this 125 year old span of steel rail. At one time Hudson was an important center of commerce for a rich agricultural yield of grain, beef, dairy and wool. Six passenger trains daily made stops to pick up and deliver travelers.

There was an article about the proposed Lenawee County Vocational and Technical Center which could benefit nearly 1,200 students from the county. Voters will be asked on June 10 to approve 1.5 mills for a charter millage that would be levied for as long as the program is in operation. Two ballots to be voted on, one for the 1.5 mills and the other for permission to bond.

There was a photo of the unbeaten Hudson girls varsity basketball team coached by Miss Marti Burgett. The team has a record of 6-0 and there was also a photo of  of the Junior Varsity, who had a 5-1 record.

Margaret Distler was elected President of Hudson Woman Club at a meeting held at the home of Miss Ethel Hartley. Other officers are Mrs. Frank Mansfield, Mrs. Paul Bullis, Mrs. Harry Stultz, Miss Ethel Hartley, Mrs. John Musson and auditor Mrs. Redman Magruder.

The South Hudson Womans Club met at the home of Mrs. Robert Shinaberry with 20 members present. Mrs. John Ruesink of Adrian showed slides and gave talk about trip she and her husband took sponsored by Farmers and World Affairs to East and West Pakistan.

Army Specialist Four William Marshall of Pittsford is completing 6 weeks extensive field training with the 4th Armored Division near Grafenwohr, Germany.

Hospital Auxiliary will hold "Tag Day" April 26 & 27, 9-9 Friday and 9-12 Saturday. Donations will benefit Thorn Hospital.

120 ladies attended the spring luncheon of the First Congregational Church on March 14, at the Fellowship Hall. The program was by Mrs. Beverly Zimmerman who presented 30 of her girls in charming modern style review of attractive clothing made in the high school classes.

Recent births include a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Morgan of Litchfield; and a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Barnes of Osseo.

Sandra G. Duncan and Alan D. Whitesell were married March 16 at Open Door Bible Church by Rev Ron Lawrence.

Sandra I. Hanlin and Michael Romanowski were married March 16 at the First Baptist Church by Rev T. R. Dolson.

Evangelist Leland Conner of Jackson will hold special meetings at Open Door Bible Church March 26-31st.

PFC James C. Topps left on Feb. 21 for overseas duty in Vietnam. He is with the 87th Engineer Battalion.

PVT Jack LaFollett graduated after 8 weeks basic training at Ft. Knox, Ky. and is home on furlough before reporting back to Ft. Knox for 8 more weeks advanced training.

Dale Harris left March 13 for the US Navy in San Diego,Calif where he will receive 11 weeks boot training.

March 14 1968

Sacred Heart School will hold an Open House March 17 from 1-4 PM. The public is invited to tour facilities and see a display of students work.

The Valedictorian for the class of 1968 will be Roger Anderson and the Salutatorian is Barbara Schroeder. Other honor students are: Dennis Ames, Cathy Carpenter, Thomas Gamble, Candace Hathaway, Janet Kubick, Mary Roney, Linda Russell, Mary Seeburger, Harriet Sherman, and Bonnie Sprague. Foreign exchange students Margarete Ovelius of Sweden and Heide Rickert of Germany are also included among the honor students and records they have made.

Miss Lora Gayle Kuney, 26, who was a remedial reading teacher in Hudson schools, was killed in a traffic accident near Eaton Rapids last Saturday. She is from Adrian and has taught in Hudson for 2 years.

There was a photo of Tom Green and John Stump of the Lion's Club with 4 men who received white canes from the Lion’s Club. They were Leo Murphy, Robert Cunningham, Joe Jenkins and Jim Gahagan. There was also a photo of the Lion's Club with their charter banner they received on Monday night.

Hudson Area School Board of Education in a special session on March 7 formalized a resolution for an election on April 22. An operational mileage and building program will be submitted at this election.

Linda Rae Grafe and Larry D. Atkin are engaged but no date has been for a wedding. Both are students at MSU.

Patricia Ann Kohn of Morenci and James D. Sayre are engaged and plan a May 25 wedding.

Donald G Sinks has been promoted to Army Pvt E-2 upon his completion of basic training at Ft. Knox, KY.

Seaman Joseph W Mitchell USN of Clayton took part in several amphibious operations while serving aboard the amphibious Transport Dock USS Cleveland off the coast of Vietnam.

Tech. Seaman David J Gardiner has returned to Norfolk, VA aboard the destroyer USS Leary following 7 months deployment off the coast of Vietnam.

Cathy Brighton and Dean Houser were married March 7 at Open Door Bible Church by Rev. Ron Lawrence.

Dorothy Elaine Baker of Argos, Ind. and Rev. Ronald Boone of Osseo were married at Bird Lake Wesleyan Methodist Church by Rev. Max Masters and Rev. Dale Keiser.

A daughter, Michelle Jewell, was born to Mr. and Mrs. George Malarney of Southfield, Mich.

Dennis Lickly and Michael Bacon of Pittsford have been inducted into the armed forces and left March 7.

Tigers lost to Jackson St John 52-40 in the second round of the Class B District tournament. Seniors playing their last game were Peacock, Toole, Davis, Timms, Vanderveer and Hill.

Local births include a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Todd Detwiler of  West Unity, Ohio.

Melvin Holmes of Waldron has been promoted to Captain in the US Air Force and is stationed at Kadena AFB in Okinawa on a 2 year assignment.

Buel’s Root Beer Drive In opened for the Season on March 18. It is open 11 AM to 11 PM and is located at corner of US-127 & M-34.

The Annual St. Patrick Day Roast beef dinner will be at Sacred Heart on St Patrick's Day. The cost is $1.75 and children 75¢.

Hudson Plating Co was burglarized over the weekend. Desks and cabinets in the office were destroyed. Taken were 350 pounds of valuable cadmium anodes valued at $1200. The thieves also took $130 in change and $8.00 in stamps. The shop is operated by Mrs. Howard Musbach and her son Tom Jones, who is general manager. They employ between 14-17 people.

March 7 1968

Hudson Area High school is to be the host for the class C-D section District VII High School Band Festival on March 9. The festival is sponsored by the Michigan School Bands and Orchestra Association. Eighteen bands will be performing.

The Hudson City Council voted to accept the low bid of American LaFrance of Elmira, NY, for $35,300 for a new unit for the Fire Department. Delivery is expected about 10 months or at the close of the year. The department badly needs new equipment to replace outdated and worn out equipment said fire chief Wes Camp. The Council also voted to enter into a purchase agreement with NYC Railroad in amount of $2,700 for all railroad property in the block between S. Church and S. Market streets. They also voted to retain a company as counsel for the new City building.

The Hudson Tigers started tournament play Tuesday night by beating Michigan Center 66-44. They play Jackson St. John tonight .

American Legion Post Commander Jack Downing presented a check for $379.00 for March of Dimes to Mark Meredith Campaign Chair, and then Commander Downing also presented  a check for $300 to Robert Lorenz, city manager and Chair of the United Fund. There was a photo of both these presentations on the front page.

Girl Scout Week is March 10-16 and activities are planned which includes Sunday Church services at the First Congregational Church and a potluck banquet on March 12.

Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Morast celebrated their 25th anniversary on March 6 at Medina, Ohio. Former residents of Hudson, they were married at Camp Clairborn, La.

Recent births include a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Sam Sines of Manitou Beach; a son to Mr. and Mrs. Harold Derr of C1ayton; a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Albert Boies; a son to Mr. and Mrs. Avery Taylor of Osseo; and a twin daughter and son to Mr. and Mrs. John R. Stump.

Sgt. Alan Baker arrived home Sunday from Vietnam after spending a year and half there. After 30 days furlough he’ll report to Ft. Sam Houston, Texas.

Brenda Irene Hinkley and Larry George Hassenzah1 are engaged and plan an April 27 wedding.

Carol Jean Caligiure of Tecumseh and Richard S. Sheldon are engaged and plan a May 18 wedding.

Linda Kay Weber of Waldron and James Almon Warren of Prattville were married March 2 at Prattville Community Church by Rev. Harry Jordon.

Arlene Ruth Ruder of Pittsford and William G Kerr of Bay City are engaged and plan an August wedding.

Rodney Bellman of the US Navy, stationed in Connecticut, was home over the weekend.

Marjean Joughin recently graduated from the Practical Nurses program at Jackson Community College and she  is now employed at Mercy Hospital in Jackson.

Suzan Jean Minor of Pittsford and Thomas C. Barr are engaged but no wedding date has been set.

Hudson Woman club met at the Fellowship Room of the Methodist church. Guests were members of South Hudson Woman's Club and Federation officers. The speaker was Dr. Richard Young of Adrian who gave a talk and showed colored slides of old houses in Adrian and Lenawee County.

Army Specialist Ronald E Shibler of Clayton took part in the defense of the II Field Forces Headquarters during the recent attack on Long Binh, Vietnam.

Seaman Dennis R Watters USN of Waldron has returned to San Diego, Cal aboard the repair ship USS Klondike following a 7 months deployment off the coast of Vietnam.

Army Pvt Philip Klingler has been assigned as a rifleman with the 199th light Infantry brigade near Long Binh Vietnam.

Hudson Tigers are to share 2nd place in LCCA with Morenci as they were beaten by Morenci 61-55 last Friday night. Gary Peacock made 22 pts.
