April 25 1968

Over 500 attended the Annual Barbershoppers Parade of Harmony show last Sunday afternoon at Miller School auditorium directed by Charles Goll.

Last Monday, April 22 was a big day when 956 voters in the school district voted and approved 6 mills in operational millage for Proposals I and II  which will provide for construction and remodeling purposes. Proposal III for a pool was defeated 607-273.

There was a photo of the new addition at Metalloy -- a 5,760 sq. ft. addition is under way. Work started 3 weeks ago and is expected to be completed about May 1. Relocation of plant supervisors, personnel offices and storage of finished parts and raw material will occupy the new quarters.

There is growing concern for the need for a new young doctor to come and practice in Hudson. The Chamber of Commerce and Jaycees are looking for someone and so far have contacted 3 doctors. One has indicated interest. Hudson has 4 local doctors-- Abraham, Dickman, Blanchard and Gamble; Thorn Hospital has been averaging 80% occupancy of the 25 beds and surgical work has also been busy.

April Lynn Brighton and Jerry Hassenzahl of Manitou Beach are engaged and plan a June wedding. Hassenzahl present1y is serving with US Army at Fort Huachuca, Arizona.

Lincoln Mother's Club met in the community rooms of Hudson State Savings Bank and honored Mrs. Velma Cunningham and Mrs. Rex Brown who are retiring at the end of the school year. Both were presented with gifts from the club.

Mr. and Mrs. M C Monroe of Pittsford were honored at an open house last Sunday in the Fellowship Hall of the Congregational Church in honor of both reaching 90 years.

Joyce Day and Stephen Ma1arney were married Apri1 20 at Sacred Heart Church by Rev. Fr. G. R. Loewen.

Mary Rothlesberger of Pittsford and James R Constab1e of Rome Center were married April 20 at Pittsford Congregational church by Rev. T. R. Dolson of Hudson.

Bruce Lemons was top salesman in the Boy Scout campaign to sell subscriptions to the Post Gazette. He sold a total of 30. He won a sleeping bag. There was a photo of him receiving bag from Scout master Henry Berglund.

31 Girl Scouts, 5 leaders and 5 senior Girl Scouts met at the Methodist church last Friday afternoon and then went to Camp Of the Hills at Wamplers Lake for the Junior Encampment over the week end. There was a photo of group in paper.

The Tigers lost their first baseball game to Jackson St Mary’s 6-3. They play Madison this week.

CPL James H Bailey entered army Nov 4, 1967, took basic training at Ft Knox, KY and after graduation went to Ft Sill, Okla. for IPC school. He is now attending NCO schoo1 at Ft Sill, Okla. He has been home for 4 days furlough.

At the Board of Education meeting, Ray Kopp, instructor for Home construction course, reported that the second house is nearly completed and offers for purchase are being accepted. An Open House is being planned for week of May 18.

A record of 137 pints of blood was given when Blood Mobile came to Hudson last Monday. It exceeded the previous high  of 121 pints in Aug 1962.

April 18 1968

The special school election is to be next Monday, April 22 with three proposals on the ballot.

The Hudson Public library celebrated National Library Week April 21-27.

The Hudson Tiger baseball team clobbered Pittsford 10-2 to pick up their third win of the year. Leading the Tiger attack were Gregg, Rodehaver and Moyer, who had 3 hits for 4 trips at the plate.

There was a photo of the “Roaring 20’s” from Cincinnati who will be featured at the local Barber-shoppers “Parade of Harmony” next Sunday afternoon at the Miller school auditorium.

Over 150 attended an Open House last Sunday for the 50th anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Glen Munk.

Dana Osburn has been promoted to Sergeant. He is stationed in Vietnam where he's been since May 1967. He expects to head for the states in early May.

Machinist Mate 3/C Frank I Kerr is serving aboard the guided missile frigate USS Jouet which recently completed its first combat cruise off the coast of Vietnam.

Marine Lance Corporal Daniel I Bignell of Waldron is serving with 3rd Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division in Vietnam.

Local births include a son to Mr. and Mrs. William Bloomer.

The Friday Club held their Annual Spring luncheon at Bill Cone’s in Jackson with 25 members and 1 guest present. New officers are President, Mrs. B F Coleman; First Vice President, Mrs. F D Mansfield; Second Vice President, Mrs. W J Enerson; recording secretary, Mrs. J.A. Decker; corresponding secretary, Mrs. J G Baker; and treasurer Mrs. J E Shaffer.

Mr. and Mrs. Jack Henderson, missionaries to Mexico will speak at Open Door Bible Church next Sunday night to show their work in Mexico. At the Wednesday night meeting; Dr. Howard Hendricks of Dallas Theological Seminary will  speak via a taped message.

Lt Wilburn Legree, the "Singing Cop” from Flint,will speak at the First Baptist church next Sunday morning . He is a retired policeman after 25 yrs with the Flint Police Department.

Sp 5/c Chas and Mrs. Brown and daughter have returned to Anchorage, Alaska, where he’s stationed with the US Army.

David Berlin has returned to Elgin Academy at Elgin, Ill. after 2 weeks vacation with his parents.

Mrs. Lucy Monroe of Pittsford celebrated her 90th birthday on April 10th and her husband M C Monroe will be 90 yrs old on April 26.

Gov. George Romney has proclaimed Friday April 26,1968 as "Odd Fellow - Rebekah Day" this is in support of the 149th anniversary of Odd Fellows in America.

Mrs. Alice Chilcote has been elected President of the Hudson Jaycee Auxiliary. Other officers are:  Shirley Sparks, Emi1y Brett, Sara Beal, Peg Merillat and Carol Jodis.

There was a photo of group of youngsters dropping fishing lines in Bean Creek from the railroad bridge down near Jackson Street.

There was a photo of Mike Vanderveer of Hudson clearing the final high hurdle to win the event, but the Pittsford track team over -powered Hudson Tigers, 77-41 on the Hudson field. Hudson took four firsts, but Pittsford took 7 firsts and won both relays.

PFC Bernard Reuter Jr is now stationed with the 6th Battalion 9th Artillery stationed in Germany.

The Annual FHA-FFA banquet was held recently at Hudson higb school. Toastmistress was Jackie Kimling and Toastmaster was Tom Popejoy. Specia1 awards were given. Entertainment provided by “The Mid-Summer Nites” an instrumental group comprised of Misses Sue Harris, Liz Winn, Martha Lawrence and Pam Hackett.

April 11 1968

Mr. and Mrs. Richard Verner of Pittsford have purchased 130 acres of land in Jefferson & Pittsford townships, which comprises 9 miles from Osseo to Lenawee County line at US-127, from the NYC Railroad Co. Many ideas are being considered as to what to do with the land.

James R Madell has been promoted to Sergeant. He’s been in Vietnam since May 1967 and recently transferred to Kontum to Bong Son.

The Junior-Senior Dance was held last Saturday night at the high school cafeteria, which was filled with popcorn, with a wheelbarrow of candy suckers and a Candy house, carrying out the Theme of "Candy Man”. The Grand March was led by pages -Thressa Holt and Mark Stiverson. King and Queen were Tony Marry and Kathy Carpenter and the Prince and Princess were Terry Ireland and Joelyn Monahan.

Paul Palpant, a math teacher at Hudson High School has been awarded a grant of $3,000 by the University of South Carolina to attend the University’s academic year institute for high school teachers in math.

Lowell Barkway’s Standard service station is under going extensive remodeling at the corner of W Main and N Market Streets. .. Hudson Barbershoppers announce their u-coming “Parade of Harmony.” The featured quartet will be the “Roaring “20”s” from Cincinnati; also the “Hustler’s” from Niles, Mich. For the first time in 6 years, the local group “Station-Aires” will also appear. Members are - Van Vande-Zande, bass; Jim Keene - lead; Ray Curran - baritone; and Bill Price -tenor.

There were several long articles stating reasons for the three proposals for Hudson Area Schools which property owners will be voting on in the school election on April 22.

Mr. and Mrs. Glen Munk of Hudson will hold an  Open House for their 50th anniversary on April 14 at Hudson Drive in the bank community rooms on US-127.

There was  a big article stating the articles of Incorporation of City of Hudson Building authority.

All Churches were listing services for Holy Week, Good Friday and Easter.

There were photos of the 1968 graduation class;  104 will graduate on May 26 at Thompson field.

“Sky High” is the name of the play to be held on May 10 and 11 by high school students. It shou1d be an exciting evening of Musical comedy.

Kathleen Kohn of Morenci and George Sipe1 Jr. of Devi1’s Lake are engaged and plan an June wedding.

Recent births include a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Miller of Jerome; a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Lyons of Hillsdale; and a son to Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Gray.

A son, James Henry was born to Mr. and Mrs. James H Borck at Hillsdale Hospital.

The Oslo Inn atop Bundy Hill on US-12  two miles west of Lake LeAnn is )now serving Smorgasbord. Complete dinners are $1.65 with lots of good food listed.

The Hudson Tiger baseball team is off to a fast start with 2 wins. They beat Adrian Catholic Central 7-1. Players listed are: Dan Toole, Jim Sweigart, and Todd Driskill to share pitching duties; Infie1d - Rick Rodehaver at third, Pat Brogan at SS; Davy Moyer at second ; Dave Earles at first, Bruce Hartman - catcher. Outfield - Chris Hill - center; John Gregg at right and Dan Toole and Jim Sweigart sharing duties at left. Coach is Tinney.

April 4 1968

Citizens of Hudson School District are being asked to vote on three proposals in a bond issue election on April 22. The proposal deals with operation costs and includes a 1.5 mill renewal and increase of 4.5 mills for a tota1 of 6 mills for period of five years. Proposal 2 asks for the sum of not to exceed $500,009 for the purpose of remodeling Lincoln Elementary school with 8 new class rooms plus other remodeling, 4 new class rooms at Clayton elementary and renovation and remodeling of Miller school for Junior High purposes. Mills needed are 2.33. Proposal 3 is for a swimming pool at Lincoln School at a cost of $370,000. The ballot is worded so that Proposal 2 must pass if proposal 3 is to pass. Enrollment in 1957 was 1331 and now is 1544.

Fire destroyed the farm home of Dave Hendrickson on Medina Road late Saturday afternoon. The two story home is completely gutted by fire, and about 1/3 of the contents were also lost.

Fireman also were called to a fire in the apartment over Delaney's Tavern on N. Church St. when fire caused damage due to defective wiring. They also were called out for several grass fires.

There was a photo of Cpl. John Winn operating an artillery gun near Hue, Vietnam. He’s been stationed there since July 1, 1965.

There was a photo of Edward Wolf being sworn in as councilman by city clerk Pauline Elliott. He is filling the unexpired term of Bruce Coleman.

There were photos of the four high school students who are participating in the Youth For Understanding. They are: Kris Kunkle, Lynn Bailey, Steve Freeborn and Monica Rising.

There was a Letter to the Editor thanking Police Chief Fry for all his work with the Teen Club for the youth in the community.

Phyllis Fellows graduated as a Medical Laboratory Technician from Elkhart Institute of Technology in Elkhart, Ind. She is employed at Hillsdale Community Health Center.

Linda Grant and Roger McNett are engaged and plan a July wedding.

LeAnn Burns and Robert D. Davis of Onsted were married at  the home of her parents Mr. and Mrs. Claud Parker by Rev. Jack Nicholson. The groom was recently discharged after 4 years service with over a year spent in Vietnam.

Army PFC Allen D. Huff has been assigned to Co. B 1st Battalion, 50th Infantry in Vietnam.

Recent births include a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Larry Sinclair of Pittsford; a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. John Forbes; a  son to Mr. and Mrs. William Beaver of Manitou Beach and a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Larry Yager of Pittsford.

Pvt. Don Rickenbaugh graduated this week from Finance Department School at Ft Benjamin Harrison, Indianapolis, Ind. After a furlough at home he is leaving for Seattle, WA and over seas duty in Korea.

There were two photos of the first and second basketball teams playing at Sacred Heart School. They were coached by John Marry. There were also photos of Sacred Heart cheerleaders -- they were Virginia Shelle, Penny Hackett, Debbie Garr, Becky Hartley, Julie Hackett, and Peggy Weber. At the Athletic banquet held at Sacred Heart School last Sunday the speaker was Ronald Spagnolia, head football and basketball coach at Catholic Central High School in Adrian. About 100 relatives and friends attended the banquet. Denis Jodis was master of ceremonies and trophies were awarded by coach John Marry and Jack Veneros, coach of the second team. Charms were given to the cheerleaders by Sister John Christine.
