Good outlook for 2006 Tiger golfers

The 2006 golf season at
Hudson High School promises to be a solid year for the group of players that head coach Kevin Reed has with him. Gone are three good players from last year in Aaron Berlin, Jeremiah Frantz and Justin Wollet but several talented players return for this season. Reed begins his third season at the helm of the boys golf program and he sees some positives heading into the upcoming season. “We have a lot of experience returning and we have some new kids that are seasoned golfers who know the game,” said Reed, who is an avid golfer himself spending much of the summer on area courses perfecting his own game. “We have a chance to do well in the league race and I see us finishing in the top half of the league. Some of the boys have been playing a lot of golf this summer so they are ready to go.” The team will open up play tomorrow (Friday) at Erie Mason in the first of what will be seven LCAA jamborees. With a squad of ten golfers Reed will have enough to field both a varsity and a junior varsity team for a few of the matches. Here is a look at who will represent the Tiger linksters on the course this late summer and early fall for Hudson.

A preview of the 2006 boys golf team

The number one player without question is junior standout Jeremy Busscher who returns for his third season of golf with the previous two as a varsity player. He finished second in the LCAA at the league meet a year ago and he looks to equal or improve upon that finish in ’06. “Jeremy doesn’t makes bad shots and has a consistent game,’ said Reed, who is expecting big things from his veteran golfer. “He is real calm and understands the game. He doesn’t let things get to him and he plays under control. He keeps the ball in play and is a superb putter. He will have a very good season for us.” The seniors who will be key players on the team are four-year player Josh Williams who will be in his second year of varsity play. “He is always working on his game to improve and it shows,” said Reed. Another senior returner is Derek Gabler who is in his third year of golf and this will be his second year on the varsity. “He keeps the ball in play and he is good at chipping the ball and putting it as well,” noted Reed. The third senior is Drew Kingsley who is in his second year of golf after giving up his gridiron days. This will be his first year on the varsity and Reed expects him to get better each time out. One of the three sophomores on the team will be the younger brother of Josh Williams as Jason Williams will be in his second year with the golf program. Two other sophomores might not have played before on the school team but they know all about what it takes to be a golfer. Both Luke Milligan and Jarrett Patterson are out for the team for the first time and both could help right away. “Both of these young men have plenty of potential and they know the game. They both have played a lot of golf during the summers and they are no strangers to the game of golf,” said Reed, who is thrilled to have both boys. Milligan played football last year and Patterson was late coming out for the team and didn’t play the full year. The final three players on the team will all be freshman and they will compose much of the junior varsity team. In a high school golf match six players compete but just the top four scores are counted in the team score. Jared Carr, Nathaniel Nastase and Josh Merillat will be the trio of newcomers to the team this fall.

“We will play our home matches at Evergreen and the Markens are a joy to work with and we are fortunate to have Evergreen as our home course,” said Reed. “I have a good number of kids to work with and they are a pleasure to coach. They all know the game and what they are doing and what I’m trying to teach as their coach.”

The 2006 season outlook

Ida and Blissfield look to be the teams to beat this season in the LCAA and Reed is hoping Hudson can surprise and play its way into the third spot. “After the top two teams it is wide open for the rest of us to battle for third,” said Reed. The coach feels a team score of around 165-170 would be a solid day’s outing for his club that will compete in the division IV regional meet this season. However, the first home matches will be Tuesday, September 12th for the junior varsity jamboree and Thursday, September 14th for the varsity jamboree. Hudson will have two other home meets when they play Pittsford twice as the Wildcats also use Evergreen as its home course. The annual league meet will be held at the Legacy course located south of Blissfield. Reed noted something special about this fall’s schedule, which has Hudson as the host team for the district meet and for the regional meet. The district meet will be Friday, October 6th at Wolf Creek Golf Course in Adrian and the regional meet will be on Thursday, October 12th at the Legacy. Reed is asking for any volunteer help that he can get when Hudson hosts these two big meets. The coach would love to hear from any person or persons who might be able to donate some time at these two courses on those two dates in October. Contact Reed at the high school at 448-8912. Evergreen can’t host the meets as the MHSAA requires the courses to be 18-hole sites. This should be a fun year for the Hudson golf team and it all starts this week at Erie Mason.
