Local walkers in the Michigan Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk benefiting the
Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation were Cathy Davis and
Trish Weaver of Hudson, Ginny McGrath of Onsted, and Amy
Keefe of
Brooklyn.
On August 11th, 12th, and 13th 4 local women joined over 2400 people at
the Michigan Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk benefiting the Susan G. Komen
Breast Cancer Foundation. They walked 60 miles over 3 days to raise
breast cancer awareness and to raise money for breast cancer research,
screening, and treatment. This year’s event in
Michigan alone raised over 5.9 million dollars. Local walkers were Cathy
Davis and Trish Weaver of Hudson, Ginny McGrath of Onsted, and Amy Keefe
of Brooklyn. The event started at
6:30 am
on Aug 11th with opening ceremonies on the lake at the Stoney Creek
Metropark and ended with an emotional closing ceremony at the Metrobeach
Metropark on Lake St Clair. Along the way, walkers were supported by
hundreds of volunteer crew members who provided food, water and snack
stops, gear transport, portable showers and restrooms, safety on the
streets, and medical services. They received hot meals for breakfast and
supper and sack lunches. Their home away from home every night was a 6'
x 7' tent. Each walker committed to raising at least $2,200 and spent
months training for this event. Although all 4 suffered aches, pains,
and many blisters, all 4 say they will participate again next year. At
each 3-day thousands of men and women walk 20 miles a day for 3 days to
battle breast cancer 1 step at a time. For some the event is a tribute
to those lost to breast cancer, for others it’s a rally for those still
fighting the disease, and for many it’s a celebration of their lives as
breast cancer survivors. Whatever their inspiration, all walkers have
the same goal: to raise money, to save lives, to put an end to breast
cancer. For more information on the Breast Cancer 3-Day visit:
