JIM MALARNEY PUBLISHES BOOK

Jim Malarney of
Adrian has spent the last several years on an interesting project that is near and dear to his heart: a history of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. "On my Father's side of the family my ancestors were all Irish, all of whom had been a part of the migration of Irish to the Hudson area who had been members of the Catholic Church in the Hudson area since the beginning," Malarney explained. "While researching my family tree I started to write down material that I would come across regarding the church which turned into over 200 pages." I then decided to organize my material into a book so that others could share in the evolutionary history of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hudson. This book which has 220 pages I have titled Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Hudson, Michigan, The Church The Irish Built, cover the history of the church from its beginning up through the present time. The history of the church at its three different locations is quite interesting." The Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hudson, Michigan has had a very long and interesting history that dates back some 160 years. The area south and west of Hudson was settled by a large migration of Irish people who had left Ireland between the 1830’s into the 1850’s many as a result of Ireland’s Potato Famine. But all of these Irish who came from many Counties in Ireland who settled in the Hudson area did have one thing in common, a strong belief in their Catholic Faith. At first the Redemptorist Fathers from Monroe, Michigan would come to the Hudson area to take care of the religious needs. But by 1843 because of population growth in the Monroe area the Redemptorist Fathers were called back to serve in Monroe only. In 1846 a small portion of land was purchased four miles south of Hudson and a Missionary Catholic Church was established. This church was called the Catholic Hill Church as it was situated at the top of a very steep hill on Munson Highway. The Catholic Hill Church was served by Father Kindenkins who was the full time pastor of what is now St. Mary’s Church in Adrian, Michigan who came to the Hudson area once a month. At the Catholic Hill location a small church was constructed, later a school and a cemetery were added. In 1858 the bishop decided that the Hudson area Catholics would be best served if the church proper was located within the Village of Hudson. Father Kindenkins purchased land on Spring Street on the east side of Hudson Village to construct the second Catholic Church complex in the Hudson area. At this location a Rectory, church building, cemetery and church school was established which would serve the Hudson Catholics until the first part of the Twentieth Century. It was decided in 1905 to construct a new church complex nearer the downtown part of Hudson. There a third location in the Hudson area a new church was constructed. Later a rectory was added next to the new church. Also a new cemetery called Calvary Cemetery was added with the first two cemeteries being closed and those buried in them were re-interned in the Calvary Cemetery. Also in 1929 a new Sacred Heart School was built and it is today the only surviving parish school in operation in Lenawee County. The current stone church located on Market  in Hudson is quite unique is constructed entirely out of cut field stone furnished by the farmers in the Hudson area. The church which just celebrated 100 years from its dedication in 1906 is indeed a special church for a small town in America.
