Sandy Marry receives lifesaving award
At
the
Delta
Township board meeting on November 20, Sandy Marry of Hudson
received an award from Fire Chief Victor Hilbert honoring her for
her actions in saving the life of Renee Steele of the township.
Marry was on her way home from her job at the
Delphi
plant in
Lansing early in the morning of September 23 when she found two
pajama-clad boys by the side of the road southwest of
Lansing.
The seven year old boys, Kyler Williams and Ryshon Steele
had woken up in a smoke filled room, and escaped after breaking through
the screen. Realizing Steele's mother was still in the house, they went
out onto the highway to seek help.
Several cars passed before Marry stopped. She put the boys in the car
and called 911, then went to a window to call for Steele, who responded
to the sound of her voice and came to the window, where Marry helped her
out of the burning building. The Delta Township Fire Department also
honored the two boys for their quick thinking and their role in saving
Renee Steele's life. Delta Township Fire Chief Hilbert reported that the
attending physician in the hospital where Mrs. Steele was taken thought
that she could have only survived another two or three minutes in the
heavy smoke.
