Helping the Pheasants Survive the Cold
Ray
Nichols (driving) and Gilly Gilhouse scatter some corn every
other day hoping to help the pheasants on their property survive the
extreme cold. Along with a few pheasants they have seen some rabbits,
wild turkeys, mourning doves and cardinals enjoying the handout through
the binoculars. "It's important to me to have people thinking about
wildlife in this cold weather," says Lenawee Extension Groundwater Agent
Amy Gilhouse, who took this photo.

Caring for Baby Chicks
The
baby chicks arrived on Monday the 5th, when the school was canceled
because of the weather. The students at Sacred Heart had fun watching
and taking care of the babies while they were in their care. The
babies will be returning to Dr. Taylor's farm this week. Thank you
Dr. and Mrs. Taylor for letting our students share in the wonderful
experience of life!

Peer Mediation
a Success at Lincoln Elementary

There are enough Peer Mediators at Lincoln Elementary
School that it takes two
photos to get them all.
Last spring, third, fourth and fifth grade students at Lincoln
Elementary School decided that they could solve their own conflicts
without adult intervention. Students voted for peer mediators,
responsible, trusted kids their own age who help classmates talk through
a disagreement in order to reach a solution. The goal of the program was
to help build positive relationships, increase a sense of
responsibility, help students learn and practice effective, caring
communication and behavior. Staff and student surveys supported the need
for the program. Peer mediators are trained to be active listeners, to
use empathy, to encourage students to express their needs and wants in
an assertive, non-threatening manner, and to help disputants reach a
good resolution. They report for duty during lunch and recess times, and
can be requested to mediate a conflict at other times of the day.
Staff and students report the following benefits: students look at
problems differently, they have improved conflict resolution,
communication and social skills, and are proud of solving their own
problems. Teachers also report fewer classroom disturbances, more time
for learning and a break from tattling.
