Boys cross country wins LCAA Jamboree

By Bill Mullaly

The past week saw all four Hudson High School fall athletic teams in action as the final days of summer are winding down. Here is a look at how the four teams did.

Boys Win LCAA Jamboree

Hudson won the first LCAA jamboree of the season last Tuesday on the home course. The Tigers scored 44 points, while second place Onsted had 67 points. The individual winner in the race was Hudson sophomore Stephen Tennis who ran a great race. "This was the best that I have run all season and I still felt very strong at the end," said the Hudson standout runner. Tennis ran a time of 17:07 to take first and as he beat another sophomore from Blissfield for first place. The effort by Tennis caught the attention of his coach Matt Carpenter who knew Tennis had run a great race. "Sabin has been our number one guy so far this season so when Stephen was ahead of him I knew that he had run a very good race," said Carpenter, who is impressed by his top two runners Enerson and Tennis. Enerson was the second Tiger in taking fourth overall in 17:37. Next, for Hudson was Zach Pearce in sixth at 18:21, while Brett Merillat was 15th at 19:05 and Derick Clark was 18th in 19:26. "We ran very well with our number 1-5 runners and I was pleased to get the first win in the opening LCAA jamboree," said Carpenter. Hudson was also at the Delta, Ohio, Invitational on Saturday and they took seventh as a team despite not having Enerson in attendance. The senior captain was busy taking his national ACT exam and couldn't make the meet. Had Enerson been running his usual race the team would have finished higher than seventh out of the 21 teams that competed. Tennis was fourth overall in 16:53. Pearce was 23rd in 18:03, while Clark was 49th at 18:59, Merillat 52nd in 19:08 and Andrew Weasel was next at 101st in 20:01. The next LCAA jamboree will be at Erie Mason on October 3rd.

Girls also compete

The Lady Tiger harriers were also on the home course for the opening LCAA jamboree a week ago Tuesday and they were fourth overall behind winner Ida with 45 points. Hudson scored 116 and second place Erie Mason had 53 and Blissfield 54 points. Emily Austin took tenth in 22:24 for Hudson. Liz Austin was 20th in 23:36, while Cassie Bailey was 31st in 24:51, Whitney Pauken was next at 39th in 26:01 and Jennifer Adams was 40th a second back of Pauken. "We ran the same course last week at home but this time all of our times were 30 seconds to a minute faster," said Hudson coach John Enerson. "I was pleased that we ran faster as a team at home and we did fine for the most part." The girls also went to Delta last Saturday and they were tenth out of 21 teams. The top Lady Tiger was Emily Austin in 18th at 21:55, while Bailey was 53rd in 23:44 and Liz Austin was 57th at 24:04. Adams was 72nd in 24:43 and Chelsea Deserranno was 81st in 25:31. Pauken was next at 90th in 26:26, while Taylor Haber was 102nd in 29:05. A bright spot was Mara Lyons who ran a 29:55 to break under 30 minutes for the first time this season. "I told Mara that now with her going under 30 minutes that she is a real runner," said Enerson, who always finds a positive accomplishment from all of his runners. Both the boys and girls will run next on Saturday at the Pittsford Invitational, which is a race run by individual classes. The meet starts at 10 in the morning.

Volleyball still trying for a win

The Hudson spikers are now 0-9-1 on the season after dropping two LCAA matches last week. Hudson was at usual league power Blissfield on Thursday and dropped the match in three games. The scores were 25-18, 25-8 and 25-8. Hudson was down just 15-13 in game one before the Royals closed with a 10-5 run to take the opening game. In the second game Hudson was the victim of a huge 17-2 Blissfield run to fall behind two games to none. In the third game it was more of the same as the Royals used a 17-4 run to take the game and match. Hudson was led by the serving of Mykahla Frayer with eight points. Rachel Pawson had seven points and three aces. Kellee Wonders had six points at the service line with two aces and on defense it was Meghan Sparapani with five digs. Hudson also fell last week to Erie Mason at home a week ago Tuesday as they also fell in three games to drop the match and fall to 0-3 in LCAA play. The team was in action two nights ago on Tuesday at they headed to Ida. The next match will be on the 27th at home against Dundee, which was the lone team they beat in the LCAA last year.

Golfers have just one match

The Lady Tiger linksters had a quiet week with just a lone match held a week ago Monday at Shaffer's Evergreen Golf Course. Hudson fell 264-267 to Jackson's Vandercook Lake. Leading the Hudson team was Samantha Stern with a 59. Aubrey Laughlin was next at 61, while freshman Emily Frantz shot a round of 72 and senior Janet Verdon had a 75. The team is still looking for its first win of the season and will be in action today (Thursday) at Shaffer's Evergreen at 4:30 as they host Hillsdale Academy.

Tigers lose again

By Bill Mullaly

The Blissfield Royals beat Hudson 21-0 on Friday night in Blissfield. This was the third straight shutout for the Royals over the Tigers and this loss didn’t go over well for the Tiger players, coaches or its fans. Many associated with the Hudson program were less than pleased by the outcome as the Royals dominated the game. After winning five straight games from 1998-2002 against the Royals the Tigers are now just 1-4 since 2003 with the lone win coming in 2004. “We came over here expecting to win so this was disappointing,” said Hudson coach Chris Luma, who had no real explanation for the loss. “We are not three touchdowns worse than them but we just didn’t play like we are capable of. Blissfield was the better team in this game but we just couldn't get anything going on offense and when we did we fumbled the ball away.” Hudson lost two fumbles and they were the first two turnovers by fumbles this season after going three games without a lost fumble.

The Royals seem to have Hudson’s number lately as they have won the last three games by scores of 14-0 in 2005, 15-0 last year and then the blanking last Friday night. The Royals scored first in the LCAA contest getting a touchdown from big fullback Luke Shrader on a run of three yards. The score came on a fourth and goal play. The kick was good by the Blissfield soccer player turned football kicker. This would be the first of three scores for Shrader who ran 26 times for 180 yards as the Royals controlled the game on the ground. Down by a score at halftime the Tigers were still very much in the game but the question began to loom over them as to whether they would score in this game. "I felt like we were in the game and in an okay position being down one score as we had moved the ball some but mistakes ended the drives," said Luma, who is now 6-5 overall in games against the Royals and just 2-4 in games at Blissfield. It was 7-0 at intermission and Shrader pretty much ended the suspense early in the second half when on the first play from scrimmage he went untouched 70 yards to paydirt for the score. Again, the point after was good by the soccer player and Blissfield led 14-0 with 11:32 to go in the third quarter. The Tigers couldn’t do much on offense and never really threatened to score the entire game as the Royal defense hit hard and they came in bunches gang tackling the Tigers on several occasions. Finally, it was Shrader scoring with 11:14 to play in the last quarter when he took it in from two yards out on a fourth down play. The soccer player let his brother, the other soccer player, boot the extra point.

Unbeaten Blissfield (4-0) ran for 251 yards to just 161 for Hudson. Neither team could pass the ball with the Royals going one of six and Hudson ending just one of eight. Gannon Curtis ran for 106 yards on 17 carries to lead the Tigers. Zach Warner ran seven times for 27 yards and Joe Rodriguez ran eight times for 27 yards. Nick Hart caught the lone pass from Warner good for 12 yards for the Tigers. Hudson committed four turnovers and the Royals had three miscues. Recovering fumbles for the Tigers were Kyle Hillard, Mitchell Webb and Chase Briggs. Hudson lost two fumbles and had two passes picked off. Hudson (2-2) will try to regroup at home on Friday at Thompson Field against Dundee.

Dundee Preview

The Vikings are not a for sure win as they come to town 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the LCAA. They are coming off a big 34-30 win over Erie Mason last Friday and the Tigers had better be ready to play. Hudson must win this game to make the playoffs, as with five games left they need four wins and this is one is a game they must get. Hudson has won 14 straight games in this rivalry from 1993-2006. The last Tiger loss was the forgettable blowout and shutout setback in 1992 by a 40-0 score. Hudson seems to have Dundee's number and look for more of the same on Friday. The Tiger players had better show some pride after the loss in Blissfield last week. Efforts like that are not what Hudson football is all about. The Tigers will get a win to keep the home folks happy. Final score: Tigers 21, Vikings 18. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
