Cross Country teams do well at Pittsford
Invitational
By
Bill Mullaly
The
past week saw all four of the Hudson High School fall athletic teams in
competition. The cross country teams took the short trip west to
Pittsford last Saturday for an invitational and both teams did well. The
volleyball team had a tough week falling in league play and struggling
in tournament play at the JCC invitational. The girls golf team had two
matches and fell both times. Here is a look at how the four teams fared
over the past seven days.
Girls and Boys both do well at Pitt
Invite
Hudson Lady Tiger
senior Emily Austin won the senior race with a time of 21:16.
Austin ran a great race and turned in her best performance of the season
to date. The event was run by classes with seniors going against seniors
and so on down to the freshmen level. Tiger junior Cassie Bailey
was eighth in 24:10. Mara Lyons was 32nd in 31:27 as a junior.
Liz Austin was 12th as a sophomore in 24:03. Jennifer Adams was
16th as a sophomore in 24:29. In the frosh race it was Chelsea
DeSeranno running a time of 28:57 for 18th place. The Hudson girls
ran very well despite the fact that no team scores were recorded.
Veteran Hudson girls coach John Enerson likes this type of format
as it gives all the runners a chance to compete against runners in their
own class and his girls responded to the challenge and opportunity that
the Pittsford meet offered.
For the boys the top
Hudson runner was senior standout Sabin Enerson who ended up
fourth overall with a time of 17:54. Brett Merillat was next as a
senior with an 18th place finish in 19:07 and senior Andrew Weasel
was 34th in 20:32. In the senior race Hudson was fourth with 56 points.
In the junior race the top Tiger finisher was Zach Pearce in
ninth at 18:08, while Nathan Chamberlain was 18th in 20:15 and
Greg Gose was 21st in 20:44. In the junior race it was Hudson in
third with 48 points. Hudson had an individual winner with Stephen
Tennis winning the sophomore race in 17 flat as he lead the Hudson
team to a second place finish with 37 points. Next, for Hudson in the
tenth grade race was Derick Clark in 10th at 19:07 and Nate
Nastase was 26th in 20:50. In the freshmen race Hudson was fifth
with 72 points. Cullan Wilkerson was 14th in 20:50, while
Nathan Wilkerson was 15th in 20:50 and Thomas High was 43rd in
26:20. It was a very solid day for the boy's team in this unique race
format that is part of the tradition of the Pittsford Invitational. The
next event for both the boys and girls will be an invitational at
Haslett on Saturday.
Volleyball team still searching
Hudson was at Ida a
week ago Tuesday for its lone match of the week and the Lady Tigers fell
easily to league power Ida by a score of 25-5, 25-10 and 25-16. "Ida was
very good and they made it tough for us to do much," said Hudson coach
Connie "Hazel" Varney. "We just couldn't do much at the net and
didn't have many kills or blocks. Also, we had trouble with
serve-receive and that helped Ida score a lot of easy points."
Leading the Hudson
effort was Jessica Varney and Mykahla Frayer both with
eight points serving. Frayer added three blocks.
A week ago Saturday it
was Hudson playing in the inaugural Jackson Community College (JCC)
Invitational. Hudson fell in pool play to Grass Lake 25-12, 25-14. Next,
it was Chelsea winning 25-13, 25-20. The third win came over North
Adams-Jerome 25-21 and 25-19, In the fourth pool play game it was Hudson
falling to Hanover-Horton 25-10, 25-11. Finally, it was Leslie winning
25-17, 25-16. Hudson is now 0-15-1 overall and 0-4 in the LCAA. "We
started slow in the JCC tournament but we ended up a lot better and it
seemed like we improved as the day went on," said coach Varney.
Jesscia Varney
had 33 points serving to go with four aces, while Frayer had 30 points
serving with five aces and Rachel Pawson had 26 service points
and five aces. Frayer ended with 10 kills and Varney added seven kills.
Pawson ended up with 11 assist. Hudson will host Dundee this evening
(Thursday) and then the team will be at a tournament on Saturday at
Stockbridge.
Golfers have two meets
On Tuesday of last
week the team was at Petersburg-Summerfield and lost 241-254.
Samantha Stern was the top scorer with a round of 55 and that earned
her the title of medalist for the meet. Aubrey Laughlin had a 59,
while Janet Verdon shot a 62, Emily Frantz a 65, Lauren
Stanley a 68 and Stephanie Jackson had a 79. The team's
second match last week came on Thursday at home at Shaffer's Evergreen
Golf Course as the Tigers fell to powerful Hillsdale Academy by a score
of 180 to 220. Stern shot a season-low 49 for her best effort of the
season so far. Laughlin had a 55, Verdon a 57, Emily Frantz a 60
and Stanley had a 69. The team is still searching for its first win of
the season. Up next was a match two days ago on Tuesday at East Jackson
and then today (Thursday) at Shaffer's Evergreen the team will take on
Grass Lake and Onsted in a three-way meet at 3:30.
Hudson loses to Dundee 27-20
By Bill Mullaly
The streak is over for
the Tigers of Hudson. After beating Dundee for 14 straight games the
Vikings pulled off a small upset defeating Hudson 27-20 on Friday night
at Thompson Field. The last win for Dundee came in 1992 over in Dundee
by a score of 40-0. The Vikings didn't beat the Tigers until last Friday
and the long drought for them is finally over. The loss leaves the
Tigers at 2-3 overall and 0-3 in the LCAA. “We just made some small
mistakes that added up to a loss,” said Hudson coach Chris Luma,
who saw his team drop its third straight game after opening with two
wins. “We changed things up on offense and got better production but it
wasn’t enough. Again, for the third straight game we gave up a long run
for a score early in the second half.”
This was a game of two
momentum swings. First, it was all Dundee to start the game as the
Tigers fumbled the opening kickoff and the Vikings recovered it. They
then went 42 yards on eight plays to score with 8:17 to play in period
one. The touchdown came on a three-yard run. The kick was good making it
7-0 Vikes.
Then Dundee scored
again early in period two as Joe Lake ran in his second touchdown
this time from seven yards away and again the kick was good. The Vikings
led 14-0 with 11:38 to play until halftime. The Tigers bounced back and
the momentum swung their way. Taylor Milligan hit Mitchell
Webb with a nice 24-yard pass to keep a drive alive. Webb finished
the 10-play 43-yard drive with a run of seven yards for the score. He
added the two-pointer and it was 14-8 with 7:08 to halftime. Then late
in the first half Keith Walworth broke free for an exciting
40-yard run for the score and the game was tied. Hudson missed the point
after and it was 14-14 with just 31 seconds until intermission.
Then the Tigers came
out in the second half and kicked off but it was Dundee losing the ball
as Tiger Colin Wollet stole the ball from the returner. Hudson
then went 29 yards in only six plays with Gannon Curtis pounding
it in from a yard out. Again, the point failed and Hudson lead 20-14.
Hudson now had the lead and the momentum but the play the coach says has
been happening too much in the second half took place. Luma was
referring to the back-breaking 77-yard Viking touchdown run by Eric
Dermanelian on the first play after the Tigers had went ahead 20-14
with 10:22 left in the third quarter. With the score the Vikings went on
top 21-20 at the 10:05 mark as the extra point was good again. Dundee
added a final score on a three-yard run by Dermanelian with 9:03 to go
in the game. The Vikes went for two and missed and Hudson was now down
just seven at 27-20. A touchdown and two-pointer would win the game for
the Tigers but they couldn't get the late key score. Hudson got down
inside the Viking 20-yard line late in the game but came up short.
Curtis ran for 91
yards to lead the Tigers as Hudson ran for 203 yards, while Dundee ran
for 235. Milligan ran from the shotgun spot for 40 yards on 13 carries
and Walworth ran four times for 37 yards. The Tigers threw a season-high
13 passes and hit six of them for 84 yards. Backup quarterback Milligan
was four of nine for 80 yards. Starting quarterback Zach Warner
led with two receptions for 33 yards and he was two of four passing for
four yards. Catching passes were Webb for 24 yard and Curtis for 23.
On defense the Tigers
were led by linebacker Nick Hart with 12 tackles, while Wollet
and Nathan Smith both had 11 stops. Walworth, Milligan, Kyle
Benschoter and Caleb Ely all had 10 tackles. Wollet had the
lone Viking turnover when he actually stole the ball but it goes as a
recovered fumble.

The Tiger Defense tries desperately to stop a Dundee Runner in the loss
at Thompson Field last Friday night
Homecoming on Friday
Up next will the
annual homecoming game on Friday against Erie Mason at 7 at Thompson
Field. The Tigers are in the midst of a three-game skid and need a win
and what better time than the homecoming game. Erie Mason comes in with
an identical 2-3 overall record. If anyone is thinking playoffs then
they had better start thinking win every game from here on out. Hudson
needs to run the table and get wins in its final four games to make the
playoffs as six wins are needed. Don't miss the annual homecoming game
and all the festivities that go with it on Friday like the parade and
crowning of the king and queen at halftime. Hudson will bounce back and
get a win, as the Tigers will fly by the Eagles. Final score 28-21.
Pop Warner Week Three
By Bill Mullaly
The third week of Pop
Warner football is in the books. There were four exciting tackle games
and here are the results. No game this year was as thrilling as the
first one last Saturday as the Addison Red team won in overtime beating
Madison 19-13. Addison’s Tyler Clark scored from three yards away
on fourth down in overtime. Had Clark not scored the game would have
went into a second overtime. His score ended the game and was a win for
Addison Red. Addison scored first with a 40-yard run by Clark and the
point after run was good by Tristan Fuqua. Then the Red scored
again as Clark ran it in from seven yards out and it was 13-0. Madison
scored on a nine-yard run by Nolan Anschuetz and he hit Tito
Cabellero for the point after. Down 13-7 the Trojans scored again on
a sneak by Anschuetz to tie the game. The try for the point failed and
we went to overtime. Madison didn’t score in four plays and Addison won
it on Clark’s run into the end zone. For Addison Mark Meckley had
two interceptions and Tylor Serrin had a fumble recovery. For
Madison Trevor Fowler fell on a fumble as did Zach Fisher.
Addison Red is now 1-2 and Madison is also 1-2.
In game two it was
Hudson winning 29-0 over Pittsford as the Tigers moved to 3-0 and the
Wildcats are now 0-3. Hudson scored first on a one-yard run by Tyler
Woody and Dustin Mattison ran in the point for a 7-0 lead.
Next, it was Mattison scoring on a nine-yard run for a 13-0 lead and
Cole Weaver soon made it 14-0. Weaver tackled a Wildcat runner in
the end zone for a safety and a 16-0 lead. Then Cody Nelson
scored his second touchdown of the year on a nine-yard run as he
bulldozed his way into the end zone. It should be noted he scored in
week two but the wrong name was recorded. Sorry Cody. J.D. Waters
got the point for a score of 23-0. The final Tiger score came on a
Clayton Brockway run of two yards in the third quarter for a lead of
29-0. Roddy Hamdan had an interception for the Tigers, while
Jacob Baker, Woody and Joe Weatherwax had fumble recoveries.
Jacob Morgan and Waters both had crushing tackles on defense for
Hudson. For the Cats’ it was Levi Hollis making a spectacular catch on
offense.
Game three was all
Adrian Maples as big Jay Reed has had team ready and they rolled
to an easy 45-13 win over Addison White. The Maples are now 2-1 and
Addison White is 0-2. Speedy Kody Galvan scored on a run of 25
yards for Adrian and it was quickly 6-0. Addison responded with a score
by Tyler Corbin and it was 6-6 as he went in on a sneak from a
yard out. Don Lofton then raced 56 yards for a score and the
point was added by David Dennis for a 13-6 lead for Adrian.
Dennis then scored from six yards out and he ran in the point after for
a lead of 20-6. Dennis scored again from five yards out and it was 27-6
in favor of the Adrian Maples. Then Chris Knorr scored on a
50-yard run for a lead of 33-6 at halftime. Next, Reed went to his bag
of tricks and used a double pass as Galvan three to Zach Etter
behind the line and Etter then hit a wide open Knorr for a 55-yard score
for a lead of 39-6. The best run of the day came from Addison’s Drew
DeFay. Corbin hit Hunter Biggs with a pass then Biggs pitched
the ball to DeFay who went 60 yards on the hook-and-ladder play for the
score making it 39-12. R.J. Walch ran in the point for a score of
39-13. Finally, Lofton scored on a run of 20 yards for the last score of
the game making it 45-13. For the Maples it was Knorr with a pair of
interceptions and Tyler Probst had a pickoff as well. Lofton had
a fumble recovery as did Auggie Rodella and Jonn Dotson
fell on a fumble. Three onside kicks were recovered as Maple kicker
Austin Garcia put on a quite a kicking display that three times led
to the Maples recovering his kicks.
In the last game it
was Adrian Blue beating Waldron 27-0. David Thompson scored first
on a run of 11 yards and Caleb Copeland ran in the point for a
7-0 lead. Carlito Hamden ran a touchdown of 12 yards and it was
13-0 Adrian Blue. Zebb Ruple ran in the point for a score of
14-0. Copeland made it 20-0 with a scoring run of 11 yards for Adrian.
Then quarterback Matt Clark hit Mitchell Dempsey with a
65-yard scoring pass for the lead of 26-0 and then it was 27-0 as Joe
Sheldon ran in the point. Hamden had a fumble recovery for Adrian,
as did Nate Fisher who had two recoveries and Dylan Murin
fell on a fumble. For Waldron Matt Fix and Keith Lindeman
had a couple of good runs. Jimmy Champion fell on a fumble and
Shane Baldwin had a real hard hit on defense. Adrian Blue is now 3-0
and Waldron 0-2.

Tiger JVs lose to Dundee 30-13
By Bill Mullaly
The Hudson High School
junior varsity football team suffered its first loss of the 2007 season
on Thursday night over in Monroe County as they played Dundee. The
Vikings were less than gracious hosts were as they whipped the little
Tigers 30-13. The Hudson team came into the game at 4-0 but left with an
overall record of 4-1. “We went over there to win but also with the idea
of playing all of our kids as much as we could,” said Tiger head junior
varsity coach Scott “Scooter” Marry. “I have no regrets in
playing kids and that was what we did. As coaches we realized a lot of
kids didn’t play the last two games against Blissfield and Onsted so we
wanted all the kids to play in the Dundee game. At this level of ball
kids want to play and not get discouraged so we put in all the kids and
mixed them up. We had starters playing along side kids who had not
played much and it worked out pretty good. I still felt that we could
have won the game even with the way we were playing kids.”
Hudson scored first
taking the ball right down the field and they went up 7-0. Dundee scored
the next 20 points and was on top 20-7 at intermission. Hudson fell
behind 30-7 before they scored its final touchdown but it was too
little, too late. “Dundee knew what we were doing but they definitely
played to win and that is okay,” said Marry, who knows there is no such
thing as an official junior varsity league champion. “They don’t give
away league championships at the junior varsity level and we would have
liked to have went unbeaten this season but playing all the kids was
more important. We are trying to keep kids interested and build this
program for the future.”
Hudson will try to get
back on the winning track when they head to Erie Mason tonight
(Thursday) to take on the Eagles in another LCAA contest. The Tigers are
currently 2-1 in league play and are still tied for first as all the
league teams have at least one loss. No junior varsity team or
individual statistics were available at press time.
