What a
week or weekend it was for the winter sports teams at Hudson High
School. I can't recall a period of time like this in years where all of
the teams just did an outstanding job and they all picked up huge wins.
If you were a Hudson Tiger fan and care about all of the teams like I'm
sure most of the fans do then you had to be smiling about the success of
these winter sports teams. I was very impressed by the good fortune all
of the teams had. Here is my reaction to the success of these teams.
Let's
start with that girl's basketball team. The win over Ida was big and it
had a playoff type atmosphere to it. If you are a fan and have never
seen Aubrey Laughlin play then get out there and watch her. She is
something very special and we have not had a player at Hudson like her
in sometime. She is such a great player and hopefully she and her
teammates can lead this team to some bigger things down the road
starting next week. This is a team sport and Laughlin certainly does not
do it by herself but she is fun to watch and she had a huge part in
Hudson winning its second straight LCAA crown. I'm assuming they won
over Dundee at home Tuesday and that would give them the outright title
and they won't have to share it with Ida like last year. I can't say
enough about the job head coach Tom Romanowski has done. His enthusiasm
for the job and his commitment to making this team something special is
very evident. Winning the league was huge but if they can pull off a
district title that will really be something. It all begins this coming
Monday at Hillsdale where Hudson plays Jonesville at 7:45 in the second
game of the night. If Hudson wins they play Addison on Wednesday the
20th at the same time at Hillsdale.
Unfortunately, this will be the same night and the same time as Hudson
will be wrestling against Addison in the regional final in Hudson. Now,
don't even get my going on this stupid situation. Because some crazy,
irate moms from Grand Rapids had nothing better to do back in 1998 they
forced the change of seasons. Even worse some foolish judge listened to
them and believed them. Amazing, still that it happened isn't it? So,
all of you fans like me that want to watch Hudson beat Addison in both
wrestling and girl's basketball will have to make a choice that night.
Good thing for cell phones!
Of
course, I'm assuming again that Hudson will win the district opener over
Jonesville, which is no given. The wrestlers will win the district and
then win the regional semifinal to face Addison most likely. Let's look
at the positive and be glad that scenario plays itself out. The girls
would most likely play either Hanover-Horton or Napoleon in the district
final on the 22nd at 7:00. Now, you heard it here first. If the girls
somehow don't win the district I don't want to hear what a
disappointment that is because they have won the LCAA and that was tough
to do. Beating Ida in an emotional game and then the next night going to
Blissfield and knocking them off that was something else. I hope they
can add the district crown to their impressive list of accomplishments
but I do know if they can beat Ida they can certainly beat those three
teams they will face in the district but it will be very tough to do.
About
our wrestlers I am so happy for them to beat Dundee and win a share of
the league crown. That was a big deal to knock off the Vikings over in
their dungeon. Now, it is on to the districts, regionals and a date with
Addison. Then it could be Hesperia, the number one ranked team in the
state, at Battle Creek at 1:00 on leap day the 29th at Kellogg Arena.
Scooter Marry has an unstoppable orange and black machine that is going
to win it all in March at Battle Creek. Hudson has never won an official
MHSAA state championship in any sport. Could this be the year? I think
so but again I don't know much about Hesperia except they are tough and
won't go down easy. First, we must get by Addison and that won't be a
sure thing as they em Tigers and let's win it all in March in BC.
Those
fighting Tiger boys had a big win over archrival Blissfield last week
and that was big. However, I must admit I would have traded that win for
one at Blissfield back in late October but, oh well. Coach Wayne Perry
deserves plenty of praise for keeping this team together after a couple
of players hung it up earlier in the season. Perry loves the ones he has
to work with and this team will be dangerous in the district and they
are the type of team that people will not want to play. Hudson will be
at the Jonesville district and will face on Wednesday the 27th the
winner of Manchester and Jonesville. If Hudson wins that game they are
in the district title game. Keep working hard boys and good things could
happen.
Those
cheerleaders have me confused. They go to Michigan Center and take third
and then they go to the Delta Plex in the shadow of P-W (Pewamo-Westphalia)
and get a huge win over their key rivals. P-W is ranked first and Hudson
knocks them off after falling to Center and Colon. This just goes to
show you that Hudson is getting better but so also is local rival
Michigan Center. The word my sources out of the Jackson area tell me is
that MC is sick of losing to Hudson. So, girls don't look past the
regional as we must win the regional to move on to the state event. I
know the top two teams advance from the regional but it would be nice to
be regional champs and then go to the Delta Plex and win it all. What am
I talking about two possible state champs in one sport season? No
actually three, the girl's basketball could win it all if everything
goes their way on the hardwood. Who knows that is why they call it March
Madness but since we are only in February we will call it February
Foolishness for me to be thinking so positively. Good Luck to all four
teams as they begin the post season play and oops I forgot but we have a
bowling team also. More on them for yet another day. Go get'em Tigers!
