Lenawee Historical Society to Feature Sacred Heart Church

The February 28th meeting of the Lenawee County Historical Society will be held at 7:30 pm in the auditorium of the Lenawee County Historical Museum, 110 E. Church St. in Adrian.

James Malarney will be speaking about his book "Sacred Heart Catholic Church Hudson Michigan, The Church the Irish Built". On October 22, 2006 the Sacred Heart Catholic Church celebrated its 100th anniversary of the construction and dedication of this very beautiful cut fieldstone church. For the past 150 years the Malarney family has been active members of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church from its beginning until the present. Jim decided to publish the history of the church for this anniversary.

At the very heart of the beginning of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church were the Irish people, who came to the Hudson area as early as the mid 1830's into the 1850's. Each succeeding generation of the parish family took up the burning desire of their forefathers to grow and care for their Sacred Heart Church. The society is glad to have James Malarney at the museum to share with us how the Sacred Heart Church has been an alive and vibrant community for each generation that has been charged with the responsibility of its care.

As always the programs are free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served after the program. For more information, call the Museum at 517-265-6071.

Columbus Museum of Art to Feature Works
                                                of Hudsonite Edna Boies Hopkins

Edna Boies Hopkins (1872-1937) is best known for her floral woodblock prints that range from delicate Japanese-inspired stylizations to boldly colored and progressively modernist works. In her brief twenty-year career, Hopkins produced seventy-four known woodblock prints, including figurative work and landscapes as well as floral compositions. Edna Boies Hopkins: Strong in Character, Colorful in Expression is the first in-depth study of this once well-known American artist, illustrating all of her known prints, related drawings, and studies.

Born in Hudson, Michigan, Edna Boies Hopkins attended the Art Academy of Cincinnati from 1895 to 1898. In 1899 she took classes with the influential artist Arthur Wesley Dow, an advocate of Japanese art. Following her marriage in 1904, Hopkins and her husband settled in Paris, where they remained until the outbreak of World War 1. After returning to America, Hopkins became part of a small group of artists in Provincetown, whose innovations in woodblock printmaking have come to be known as the Provincetown print or the white-line woodcut. In 1917, a visit to the Cumberland Falls region of Kentucky provided the inspiration for some of Hopkins’s most important prints, which predate the work of American regionalist painters and printmakers by a decade or more.

In addition to the catalogue raisonne, Edna Boies Hopkins includes much new biographical research along with a census of her prints and a comprehensive list of her exhibitions.

Dominique H. Vasseur, a curator of European art at the Columbus Museum of Art, is the author of The Soul Unbound: The Photographs of Jane Reece and The Lithographs of Pierre-Nolasque Bergeret.

The exhibition of Edna Boies Hopkins will be at The Columbus Museum of Art in Columbus Ohio through March 2, and at the Springfield Museum of Art March 15 through June 1. The book by Dominique H. Vasseur Edna Boies Hopkins is available through the Ohio University Press.
