Tiger head on to the playoffs!
By Bill
Mullaly
The big
meets and games are being played by the Hudson High School winter sports
teams as the playoffs are here. The wrestlers put on quite a show at
Addison during the individual district meet as they sent 11 wrestlers
onto the regionals. The boy's basketball team won a game and lost one
over the past week with the win coming over local rival Morenci. The
girls won two games including a win over Dundee to clinch the LCAA title
all by themselves. The competitive cheerleading team won its only meet
of the past week. Here is a look at the teams and how they have done
over the past week.
Wrestlers on a Mission
It has
become quite evident that the Tiger grapplers our on their way to
something special in the weeks ahead. Hudson had seven individual
champions at the individual districts on Saturday at Addison. Dakota
Kelley (103), Zeb Hilyard (112), Kevin Vanderpool (119), Derrik Marry
(130), Eric Wolf (135), Kyle Hillard (171) and Gabe Elliott (189). Also,
qualifying were Taylor Smith 2nd at (125), Joey Beaubien 2nd at (215),
Caleb Ely 3rd at (152) and Matthew Smith 3rd at 285. The seven
individual champions is a nearly unprecedented achievement. Addison had
13 qualifiers and the other three Tigers that didn't qualify were very
close to making it to the regional round this Saturday at Manchester.
The
team portion of the season continues on very well for the Tigers as they
won the team district last Wednesday at Morenci. Hudson beat Sand Creek
66-3 in the district semifinal match as they won 13 of the 14 matches.
Getting pins for Hudson were Marry, Wolf, Hillard, Smith and Kyle
Benschoter. Hudson then whipped Morenci in the finals to move on to the
team regional set for last (Wednesday) night at home versus Union City.
A win over the Chargers would put Hudson against Addison if the Panthers
beat Jonesville as expected. The Hudson-Addison match would start about
7:30 after the semifinals that begin at 6:00.
Girls win LCAA all alone
For the
second straight year Hudson is the LCAA champions and this year they
won't have to share it with anyone. Hudson won at home over Dundee last
Wednesday 87-51. Aubrey Laughlin had 19 points and four steals. Sheila
Komarynski had 10 points and 12 rebounds. Rachel Pawson scored 15 points
and added eight assists. Mykahla Frayer had 13 points and steals. Ashley
Boies added 10 points in the win that gave Hudson a 9-1 league record,
while Ida was second at 8-2.
The
Lady Tigers won a key non-league game at home last Friday as they
whipped Lenawee Christian 64-44 to finish at 15-4 on the season. It was
Hudson on top 16-11 after one quarter and 29-16 at halftime. It was
46-25 after three quarters and the Tigers went on to the win to get
ready for the districts at Hillsdale. Laughlin scored a game-high 22
points. Pawson had 14 points and Kellee Wonders had 13 and 10 rebounds.

falling to Dundee on the road by a count of 68-50. Dundee led 16-11 and
then they were up 33-24 at halftime. The lead increased to 53-38 after

up 2-8 in the LCAA tied with Erie Mason near the bottom of the
standings. Taylor Milligan led with 12 points, while Blake Woodward and
Garrett Schoonover both scored 11 points. Jeremy Busscher and Brandon
Hephner both added four points.
The win
over the Bulldogs was a nice win for the team as they are now 3-15 on
the season overall. The Tigers went up 15-9 after one period and they
still led 33-22 at halftime. The lead ballooned to 49-34 after three
quarters and the Tigers kept the 15-point to finish the game. Hudson was

boys will begin district play this coming Wednesday the 27th at
Jonesville as they take on the winner of the Jonesville and Manchester
game. A win in that game puts the Tigers in the district final on Friday
the 29th.
Cheerleaders win again
Hudson
was at Blissfield last Wednesday for an event and Hudson won 723 to 673
over Ida, which was second. The team had a rare Saturday off and didn't
compete last weekend. They will host a big LCAA league meet at home
tonight (Thursday) at 6:00.
All
four teams will be involved in key games over the next week or two so
get on out and support the Tigers!
Girls Win District Opener
Hudson
had a tough time but escaped with a win on Monday night at Hillsdale
beating Jonesville 68-62. Kellee Wonders had a great game scoring 21
points and she had 10 rebounds to go with seven assists. Aubrey Laughlin
added 22 points and five boards. Rachel Pawson had 11 points, while
Mykahla Frayer added eight and Sheila Komarynski had five.
Hudson
led 17-12 after one quarter and at halftime they led 30-24. The Comets
jumped ahead 43-42 entering the final quarter but the Tiger offense got
going scoring 26 points to take the opening win. "We didn't play well at
all on defense," said Hudson coach Tom Romanowski. "We didn't rebound
well either. Kellee really played well and she was ready for a breakout
game. Late in the season she had been struggling some but she really
played well in this game after playing well against Lenawee Christian on
Saturday."
Hudson
moves to 16-4 overall on the season with the win. The victory pits them
against archrival Addison last (Wednesday) night at 7:45 at Hillsdale in
the district semifinal. A win over the Panthers will put the Lady Tigers
in the district final on Friday night against the winner of the
Napoleon-Hanover-Horton game.
