Spring sports season gets under way despite weather
By Bill
Mullaly
The
snow has melted and the start of spring sports at Hudson High School has
taken place over the past week. However, the weather still played havoc
with the schedule and the ability of the teams to play games and have
meets. Here is a look at what happened in what was supposed to have been
the first full week of the spring sports season.
Softball wins big in opener
Things
have not been good for the team as far as getting to play games but the
one game they played was a big win with Hudson taking apart Jackson
County Parma Western 15-0 in a mercy shortened win to start the season.
The game went just four innings. Senior hurler Sheila Komarynski got the
win in the circle for the Tigers. She gave up just a pair of infield
hits and she recorded seven strikeouts for the complete game win. Senior
Kellee Wonders and Emily Austin both had two hits to lead the team.
Wonders had a pair of runs batted in and Austin scored three runs in the
game. Maria Miller also helped out with two hits and a run batted in.
The Lady Tigers were supposed to host the CR Motors Invitational last
Saturday but it was cancelled due to lousy weather.
Boys and Girls Track teams begin year
Both of
the track teams were at the 32nd annual Clinton Relays on Saturday,
April 5th to start the season on a warm, sunny day. The Tiger boys did
well with the middle distance relay team winning. The winning members
were Keith Walworth, Brett Merillat, Stephen Tennis and Sabin Enerson.
It was Enerson who ran the final leg to come from behind to help Hudson
win that event in exciting fashion. The winning time was 6:29 with
Hudson edging out Milan. The Tiger 3200-meter relay team was second in
9:10 and he 6400-meter relay team was third in 20:29. The events where
the Tigers took fourth place were in the shuttle hurdle in 1:15 and the
1600-meter relay team was fourth in 3:56.
For the
girls the only tandem to win an event for the Lady Tigers was the long
jump team of senior Aleah Reese and Mariah Kelly. They had a combined
winning jump of 27-1 to take first. Getting second place for Hudson was
Emily Grob in the 100-meter hurdles in 18.3. Taking third for Hudson was
sophomore Liz Austin in the pole vault jumping 6-0. In fourth places
were the high jump team going 8-8, the distance medley team in 15:28,
the 800-meter relay team was also fourth in 2:04 and the 3200-meter
relay team was fourth in 11:49.
The
team was supposed to have opened its dual meet portion of the season
last Thursday in a tri-meet but that was canceled. Also, last Saturday
the Addison Relays were called off due to the inclement weather. Thus,
the team has not had much competition early in the season but many more
big meets remain.
Baseball team struggles early
Hudson
began its season last Saturday at Carleton Airport in a tournament. The
weather was not the best but the teams still played and Hudson went 0-3
to start the season. The Tigers fell to Livonia Churchill in the first
game 13-4. Taylor Milligan and Chris Aguirre each had two hits and Kyle
Benschoter did even better with two hits but he had two doubles. Aguirre
took the loss on the mound.
In game
two the Tigers went down in six innings in a shortened game falling 19-8
to Essexville Garber. Colin Wollet had the highlight of the game with a
grand slam home run to lead the way for the Tigers. Alex Middleton had a
pair of hits with a double and he had two runs batted in. Josh Shepard
suffered the pitching loss for Hudson.
The
host Airport team handed the Tigers their final loss of the day 16-7 in
six innings. Wollet was the offensive leader with two hits and he had
more than half as the club collected just three for the game. Middleton
was the pitcher of record in the game taking the loss.
Golfers begin year
Hudson
was at the Ida Invitational last Saturday and they took sixth out of 12
teams. The stableford system of scoring was used and Jeremy Busscher had
the best score for Hudson. Three days ago on Monday of this week the
golfers were in Adrian for the Maple Invite and Hudson was 15th of 19
teams but Hudson was the smallest school in attendance at the event.
Busscher led the way with an 81, while Luke Milligan had an 87, Jarrett
Patterson had a 92 and Josh Merillat a 93. With good weather expected
all this week the five sports should all see much more action or at
least we hope so. Check your local schedules for times and places for
the games and events.

at the plate, with Ashley delivering a grand slam over the fence. Also
recording hits were Courtney Chrisman, Vanessa Varney, Julia Scoby and
