Spring Sports Teams Busy

By Bill Mullaly

The past week saw all of the Hudson High School spring sports teams busy in action as the teams were all over the fields, tracks and courses playing ball, running track and shooting golf. Here is a look at how the teams did as April has come and gone and has given way to May. The weather the past week fully cooperated and all of the teams got all of their games in. No games were played on Saturday as the teams took time out for the really important thing in the spring and had their prom on the 26th. No word was received on who won the prom but the real winners are always the people that sell tuxes, own restaurants and sell flowers. With that said let's take a look at how the Tigers and Lady Tigers did over the past week.

Softball Wins Two, Falls Twice

Hudson whipped Homer twice last Thursday 3-2 and 6-2 for a key twinbill triumph. Sheila Komarynski was the winning pitcher in game one getting nine strikeouts and she walked nobody. She allowed just three hits and on offense she had two hits, as did Jessica Varney. Jenna Borck had a run-scoring double. Megan Gunn had a key RBI groundout in the seventh inning that ended up being the difference in the game. In game two Gunn was the winning pitcher getting four K's and she, like Komarynski, didn't walk a batter. "Fourteen innings and no walks that is great," said a jubilant Tiger head coach Mike Sprow. "Both of our girls pitched very well and that was the key to the wins."

In game two Gunn gave up five hits but held on for the win. Hudson had 10 hits in the win. The big hit was a bases loaded single by Komarynski in the seventh inning that nearly decapitated the shortstop. The hit was big because it broke a 2-2 tie and put Hudson up 4-2 and two more runs scored on wild pitches. Emily Austin had two hits and Komarynski led with three. Borck again had a RBI double in the second game.

The two big non-league wins came after Hudson was stopped cold by Onsted pitching at home on Tuesday of last week. Hudson fell 4-1 and 9-1 to the powerful Wildcats who have some strong pitching. Hudson suffered 13 strikeouts in game one and they whiffed 12 times in the second game. Komarynski had eight K's for Hudson in the loss in game one. Austin had two hits to lead the Tigers in game one and Kellee Wonders had two hits in game two. Komarynski took the loss in game two with four K's. Hudson is now 0-2 in the LCAA and 6-6 overall on the season.

Baseball Wins Three, Loses Three

Hudson is off to a great LCAA start at 2-0 on the diamond after whipping Onsted twice last Tuesday at home. Hudson won 6-5 in the opener over Onsted and then took the nightcap 9-2. Chris Aguirre was the winning pitcher coming on in relief tossing five outs of hitless ball. Down 5-2 the Tigers scored four runs over the last half of the game to take the key league triumph. Nathan Smith had two hits with a single and double, three runs scored, stole two bases and had a run batted in. Taylor Milligan had a double and two RBIs. In the second game Jeremy Busscher was the winning pitcher for Hudson. Drew Milligan, Colin Wollet and Alex Middleton had all two hits with one of them a double. Busscher gave up just one earned run in pitching a gem in the nightcap.

On Thursday at Homer the Tigers split a twinbill against one of the top teams in the area as Homer came in at 10-1 but the Tigers spanked them in game one 11-3 after leading at one time 11-1. Aguirre got the win allowing six hits. He had six K's and walked five. Mitchell Webb had three hits and Middleton had two with a home run and three RBIs. Wollet had two hits with one being a dinger. The second game the Trojans won 10-7 in a five-inning contest. Josh Shepard took the loss. Middleton had two hits with one a grand slam and he had five RBIs.

On Friday the Tigers went down twice to Grass Lake falling 8-3 and 5-3 to one of the top teams in the area. As the Warriors moved to 11-2 with the sweep. Middleton took the loss in pitching game one. Drew Milligan had two hits and two steals in the opener and Smith also had two hits. In game two it was Busscher taking the loss on the mound. Webb had two hits and two steals, while senior standout Nick Hart had two hits with one being a double. Hudson is now 7-9 overall and 2-0 in the LCAA.

Girls fall on track to Royals

Blissfield had its way with Hudson winning 91-46 in a LCAA dual meet last Thursday at Blissfield. In the field events Sarah Luma won the high jump leaping 4-10 for the lone field event win. Jamie Grob won the 100-meter hurdles in 17.2 and Grob ended up a double winner as she won the 300-meter hurdles in 52.5. Luma also was a double winner for Hudson running the 800-meters in 2:47. Blissfield won all four relays as they dominated the meet. The girls placed seventh overall at the Jackson Western Invitational on Friday. The top placer for Hudson was Liz Austin who was third in the pole vault leaping 7-6.

Boys lose to Royals on track

It was Blissfield taking an easy 97-39 win at Blissfield in the league dual meet. Hudson had a winner in the 110-meter highs in Ryan Roys going 17.3. Keith Walworth showed his sprinter's speed winning the 100-meter dash in 11.4. Walworth made himself a double winner as he took the 200-meters in 23.5. Hudson won the final event of the meet as they took the 1600-meter relay in 3:53. Hudson was at the Jackson Western Invitational on Friday and they were sixth overall. Sabin Enerson was second in the 800-meters in 2:08 and he was second in the 1600 in 4:51. Walworth was second in the 400 in 54.7 and the relay team was second in the 3200-meter relay. Brett Merillat was third in the 3200 in 11:04, while Stephen Tennis was fourth in the 1600 in 4:53 and the 1600 relay team was fourth in 3:39.

Boys win and take third on links

The golf team had a busy week with two LCAA jamborees. The Tigers won the Ida jamboree held last Thursday at Green Meadows Golf Course shooting a 165. Busscher had a round of 39, while Luke Milligan and Josh Merillat each shot a 41and Gannon Curtis shot a 44.

Three nights earlier in a LCAA jamboree at Blissfield the Royals won scoring a 178, while Ida was second at 187 and Hudson third at 190. The medalist for the meet was Busscher with a round of 41. Curtis and Merillat each had a 49.

Check the local schedules for all of the action coming up including the annual Hudson Booster Saturday Sports Spectacular on May 3rd.
