Spring sports coming to an end
By
Bill Mullaly
It’s
crunch time for the five spring sports teams at Hudson High School as
the regular season play is now over and the post-season has begun. The
five teams wrapped up LCAA play last week but unfortunately none of the
teams were able to win a league crown this spring. The golfers did the
best coming in second but the other four teams took third or lower in
the league standings. Now the playoffs have begun. Here is a look at
what happened in the final week of the regular season for the Hudson
teams.
Golfers take second
Hudson
came in second to Ida in the final LCAA standings after finishing third
at the LCAA meet last Tuesday at Woodlawn Golf Club. Hudson shot a round
of 352 to fall to Ida with a 333. Blissfield was second with a round of
348. In the overall final standings it was Ida with 29 points and Hudson
had 22 for second with Blissfield having 18 for third. In the league
meet Gannon Curtis led Hudson with a round of 84, while Luke Milligan
had an 85. Josh Merillat had a score of 91 and Jason Williams a 92. In
the division 4 district meet last Thursday at Devils Lake Golf Course it
was Hudson taking second to Battle Creek St. Philip as St. Phil had a
308 and Hudson a score of 326. Hudson will now advance to the regional
meet. Jeremy Busscher had a score of 79. Curtis had an 83, while Jarrett
Patterson and Merillat both had 85’s.
Baseball takes third, hits 20 wins
The
Tigers split their final LCAA twinbill last Tuesday at home falling to
Ida 10-7 in the first game and then winning the nightcap 4-3. Alex
Middleton pitched the opener taking the loss but his defense made five
errors. Josh Shepard finished up the game in relief. Taylor Milligan had
three hits with a triple and double good for three runs batted in.
Shepard added two hits. In the second game the winning pitcher was Luke
Milligan and he recorded seven strikeouts. Nick Hart had the big hit
with a triple good for three RBIs. Hudson ends the LCAA portion of its
schedule at 6-4 and in third place. Blissfield at 8-2 took first for its
15th straight league title.
On
Saturday at the annual CR Motor Sales Invitational the Tigers won two of
three games to finish in second place. Hudson beat Grass Lake 9-1 and in
the final lost to Temperance Bedford 13-2 in five innings. The losing
pitcher was Luke Milligan, as the Kicking Mules roughed him up early in
the game. Nathan Wilkerson came on in relief to finish the game.
Mitchell Webb had a hit and a RBI and Taylor Milligan added a base hit.
In the
game with Grass Lake it was Webb being the winning pitcher going all
seven innings and getting four strikeouts. Taylor Milligan had three
hits with a triple and double good for four RBIs and he added two runs
scored. Drew Milligan added two hits with one being a triple and he
scored twice. Colin Wollet added three singles in the win over the
highly-ranked Warriors. In the third game of the day it was Hudson
playing Bedford in a fun game and the Tigers won 15-14 but this didn’t
count in the tournament standings.
Middleton was the winning pitcher but he did get relief help from Cullan
Wilkerson. Shepard threw a 1-2-3 seventh inning for the save. Kyle
Benschoter had a big game with three hits, three runs scored and three
RBIs along with two stolen bases. Taylor Milligan was three for three
with a triple and two RBIs and four runs scored. Wollet belted a dinger
good for a three-run homer. Hudson is now 20-17 on the season and they
are ready for the district on Saturday when they play at home. The
Tigers will host B-D better known as Britton-Deerfield at 12:30. Then
they will play in the final at 3:00.
Softball struggles without a win
Hudson
was unable to get a win on the diamond as they lost all six games they
played over the past week. On Tuesday in the LCAA finale at home they
fell twice to a powerful Ida team. Hudson ends at 2-8 in the LCAA and at
near the bottom of the league standings. Ida won 11-0 and 12-1 with the
second game in five innings. Sheila Komarynski pitched the first game
and had 12 K’s. She added a RBI double on offense. Kellee Wonders had a
single and scored the lone run on the day. In game two it was Megan Gunn
pitching recording three strikeouts. Hudson had just three hits with
Jessica Jackson, Jessica Varney and Gunn getting the hits.
On
Friday Hudson played the fourth rated team in division 4 in Lenawee
Christian and they lost twice falling by scores of 7-0 and 4-3. Hudson
ran into standout Cougar pitcher Abbie Forman and the Lady Tigers had
just one hit a single by Wonders in the opener. Komarynski took the loss
getting four strikeouts.
The
second game was a bit different but not much as Hudson had just four
hits with Emily Austin and Boyoung Kim getting singles and then they
scored on a two-run double by Komarynski. Gunn then singled to score
Komarynski making it 3-0 Hudson early on. Forman toughened up and ended
with a game-high 16 strikeouts to get the win. The Cougars scored a run
in the home half of the final inning to take the win. Gunn took the game
two pitching loss for Hudson but did get five strikeouts.
Then on
Saturday it was Hudson playing in the always tough Bronson Polish
Invitational and they lost both games. The Tigers fell to state power
Galesburg-Augusta 14-0 in five innings. Mykahla Frayer did the pitching
taking the loss and Hudson had just one hit with Wonders getting that
one.
In game
two it was Hudson falling to Buchanan 3-2. Komarynski took the loss
getting six K’s. Ashley Boies and Katie Butts both had doubles and
Austin added a single. Hudson is now 13-19 overall on the season but
they will host the division 4 district on Saturday. The Lady Tigers take
on B-D also known as Britton-Deerfield at 10 in the morning. A win puts
them in the final at about 2:00. Look for Hudson to win this district if
all goes as planned.

As a
